RAM was just tip of the iceberg. Mainstream GPU is going to be dead, NVME storage has already gone up almost 3x, next up are consumer CPUs as everyone vies for fab contracts. Highest bidders only. Easy to imagine the PC market will be ultra low end and ultra high end in the not too distant future.

I thought I was being retarded when I spent like 7k on my computer early last year, now I feel like a gaming wizard. I feel bad for anyone who wants to build a computer now. Prices on literally everything with memory is getting completely fucked.

Rumors continue that Nvidia is, at best, pausing production on the lower end 16GB cards
There's additional rumors out there that even at the 8GB level, it'll just be 5060TIs soon.
(Again, Nvidia doesn't make their own chips, if component costs go through the roof, there's only so much they can do, like limiting the memory cost inflicted to just the highest base cost version. Third parties are even more fucked, as apparently they only netted ~$50 profit per board, meaning memory increases render those cards literally unsellable at a profit for them.)
In terms of CES, the consensus is that at earliest, the next gen cards won't be available until Q3 of 2027, _if_ memory orders have settled by then.
I actually talked my nephew out of buying a high end video card over the summer until the 5XXX Supers came out. Thank god the stop gap 9060XT I bought him to tide him over was the 16GB version.
Edit: I forgot, there are a ton of rumors that Nvidia is reintroducing the five year old 3060 as their defacto new low end card. Let me reiterate that the future sucks.

I don't game much the last couple years, but I'm also still running a 1070 / Ryzen 5 1600. I thought it had died but didn't deal with it because parent life. Anyway, thought I'd see what was up around Christmas and it booted right up, no issues since. Part of me wants to upgrade to avoid even shittier prices in the event the GPU or something else dies, but I probably game 10 hours a month or so.

Parts were stupid hard to find, so I got lazy and bought one on Amazon. They still have 5090 PCs for 5k on Amazon. I got the Skytech one on sale for 4400 with the best AMD processor. Other than having to troubleshoot and reseat the motherboard power connector (a fan cable was pinched in the connector, causing power loss on games) and Sleep mode being a biatch, 0 complaints for gaming.

I just looked. The 4090 I bought 2 years ago when I got a new computer is now only on sale on a few stores that I can find at $4k+.
I think I upgraded at just the right time. Will keep dusting it off to keep it functioning. Prices on things now are insane.

Our company made news because for years we've been pushing AI PCs/notebooks. At CES this year we rebranded away from that bullshit and are quoted saying consumers just don't care about AI computers and honestly... It's the most refreshing thing to hear.
