The review? Dunno. The movie is good, 60's counter culture / Revolutionism meats modern fascism and the chaos of it all defeats Leo lol. Its one of those movies where if you get mad at it you are kinda missing the forest for the trees, yea it could be symbolism for today but its not and you are whoppsing if you reacted like Shapiro did lol.
Like the still Drinker uses isnt supposed to be heroic, its not praising that action, though him using it tells me he misses the point. Hes fine if you want to hear him rip or whine about Star Wars or something, but the movie is too nuanced for the standard "culture war" shtick
Extremely well shot, written and acted. Penn acted his role to get a response from people who are tone deaf, and Del Toro was hysterical.

Rapes? nope. Kid that comes from it being the thrust of Leo's character? sure. Look at it more as Regina Hall using her wiles to get out of situation and consider the cause more important then sex, even his her compatriots consider it a betrayal. Penn's character meets his end due to that in an over the top white supremacy to the nth degree hilarious way.
As I said Drinker is the WRONG person to analyze this film in any regard lol

I guess he missed where it was making fun of the Far Left the entire time. But I guess I missed it when a "strong" black women revolutionary failed so hard she had to bang a white supremacist authority figure and sell out her friends, then keep the baby and dump it off on Leo and vanish after the first act was being heroic. Then when said white supremacist tried to join a powerful cabal of white supremacy and they found out he had a biracial child that he didn't raise or have any agency in watch them gas and incinerate said "bad guy" I thought "Wow, this is just like MAGA". Dont forget the buffoonery of Del Toro's karate instructor character.
Like its not the best movie of all time or anything, its not even PTA's best film, but this year had been dire for Oscar bait films. This one just has good enough acting to probably push it over the top.
Dude got lucky Bale played a character he wrote so well, he hasn't written anything good since the 1991.
When was the Kamala Harris era anyways? Must have napped through it

If it only the movie had done any of those things! But hey Lefistism leaving Leo as a single father raising a kid that wasnt his and being so drugged out from his experience from it taht he is barely functional must be a strong level of support somewhere!
People got mad because it lampooned the extreme (read not what MAGA actually is but literal cartoonish people that would make Nazi's blush) authotarian Right, because media literacy might actually be fucking dead. And thats just it. The people depectied are what people think the far left and right are but obviously neither are in reality. What was shown would be exhausting, beyond traumatizing for everyone involved and the person that was shown to be effected the most checked the fuck out.
Oscar best film? Probably. My best film? No. Best film recently? no. Well acted, shot, scored, written? Yessir.

...which makes it really easy for the left to cheer on when those cartoonish evil people are actually being killed for their beliefs.
