Likely linked already but linking again anyhow:

I wasn't aware you could copyright concepts, so this was informational and infuriating.

Where was it said it was 28 patents? First I've heard of a solid number or even a guess that high

I misread your gamerant link a bit but the patent attorney in said link found up to 28 patents that could be central to the lawsuit.

Yup, every single patent was post Palworld release and even worse, most of the shit Nintendo got a patent on are game mechanics that have existed for decades

This situation creates an interesting conundrum

1) If Palworld decides to settle outside of court "for an undisclosed amount", then they potentially save on legal fees and presumably there would be some manner of future immunity clause in said settlement. However, this never challenges the patents themselves, which means Nintendo can toss this shit around later with other games

2) If Palworld challenges, it is possible they may win, but the legal fees may greatly exceed what they could have settled for. Unless they had a corporate sponsor (like Sony), this might not be a viable option for the company.

Missed the update on the Palworld saga:

22 of the 23 patents filed by Nintendo were rejected.

Apparently the japanese patent system works on the basis that you can happily patent other people's stuff as long as you do it before they do.

Something to keep in mind in future complaints about how broken the US patent system is ;p

Whens the farming version coming out, wife would be into that
I hadn't heard of that:

Kinda cool. Seems like this could be a game mode in Palworld though. Adding the ability to collect most Pals via farming is totally reasonable, along with anything else you need.

Yeah but new games sell more copies than expansions.

You can't patent game rules and mechanics - adding 'on a computer' shouldn't make any difference. That's one thing going for US patent law I guess.

I'll agree that changing that is stupid, and will end up in disaster when no-one can make anything without getting 300 separate licenses from EA-Disney corp. So this ruling is a clear win.

On the other hand, it does feel like Palworld guys should be guilty of *something*.

didn't the guys from mtg patent "tapping" a card?

They did, but they never successfully sued anyone over it. Although I guess 'success' there should be 'patent was challenged and upheld' rather than 'opponent ran out of money defending against our lawsuits'. The latter they managed pretty effectively.

LOL! Agree. This shit is so...blatant that as much as a can't stand Nintendo suing God himself, they have a point on the Palworld thing.
