I own a business that is pursuing a smartphone app that is using proprietary processes to track timber in a way that is new to the industry. What are the rules and regulations on getting the processes (both on the OS side and the physical side) patented?

I'm looking to put a bump in the road between what I'm doing and companies that will want to duplicate what I'm doing. With this being super vague, do I have any course of action?

It's less about spending thousands in defense and more about being able to threaten them with legal action.
