I didn’t really pay attention to the console war as it were last gen, but didn’t the gen before that has 360 wipe the floor with PS3 for a bit?

Yep, Sony was actually in third place for the first few years of the PS3/360/Wii era. Wii got the kids/families/dweebs, 360 got the adults. PS3 was priced higher than the others but it had blu-ray player support which was still novel at the time and I don't think 360 had that. It wasn't until blu-rays became ubiquitous and PS3 got some major exclusives like the Uncharteds and God of War that people really started switching over to it. Not sure when it overtook Microsoft but Sony was firmly in the lead over the other two by the time PS4 dropped.

It's hard to believe Microsoft is doing so badly now, but at the same time it isn't hard to believe at all. Their console-naming was abysmal from a marketing point of view. XBox One being their third generation? XBox Series X, not to be confused with XBox One X? And how do the S's fit in? Who knows! The average idiot wants things to be simple. PS2, PS3. iPhone 7, iPhone 8. Or at least clearly-defined. Gamecube, Wii. (Wii U was a misstep on par with Microsoft's marketing mistakes)

Side note: That time period where Blu-ray was catching on and HDTVs were becoming an affordable mainstream thing was a magical time. I still remember my first HDTV (a crappy Sylvania that could only go up to 720p) and playing my first HD game on it, Bioshock. That was less a game and more of an experience. Metroid Prime for the next generation, that's what Bioshock kinda was. The tech was snowballing so fast at that point that it felt like the sky was the limit, and I've never been more hyped for a console than I was for the PS4.

Sony used their console to win the "format" wars, which they did. Remember back then you had blu-rays who Sony was a key founder in the organization that developed them, and HD-dvd which Microsoft pushed. However, they made that extension you could plug into the 360 and didn't have it on the console to be cheaper.

And the original PS3, while more expensive, was far superior to the 360. It had better hardware and had full backwards compatibility with a chip as well as being a really good blu-ray player. I remember being upset at games that entire generation because the exclusives on the PS3 were much better than the 360 in terms of visuals/fps, but there were tons of articles with interviews from developers stating that they had to push back the quality/ability of their games to be able to make them "comparable" on the two systems.

I got a 360 for Blue Dragon (which along Lost Oddysey were the only? exclusive RPGs on the console?). But it got an error where the disc got stuck inside it and it wouldn't eject. This was in the "red ring of death" era and due to Microsoft not wanting accurate numbers of errors on the console to be released, they forced me to send it into them instead of returning it to the store. This was in violation of Norwegian consumer laws, but the store said that their hands were tied, Microsoft demanded it. Got it back about 2 months later (different console, but clearly used). Around three weeks later, it got the red ring of death thing. I just gave it away to someone and said they could send it in and get it returned. My original fat PS3 still works. Hell in terms of hardware, it was also universal (no region lock) and even had a switch on the back to change from 110 to 220v. I got it shipped from Canada at half the price it was in Norway.

Japan specifically MS has always done really really bad, even the OG Xbox/360 had major problems(brand loyalty is what it is all about in Japan).

Even today I have a large BD collection so I usually end up buying a console with a disc drive. About time for me to just use my old PC to build a media server. Just not a project I’ve wanted to take up.

They put the Playstation leadership under Japanese control earlier this year. Hopefully that improves things.

Not that I'm defending Sony, but that graph is utter shit. No numbers, no time frames. It's pure clickbait garbage.

Even if the chart did have solid data, people should be happy that Sony Soy Francisco was only allowed to destroy those IPs and not all of them.

C'mon man, this is pure hyperbole too. Most of the great indie games come out on everything including even Switch 1, and there's been plenty of really good AA and even a few AAA games in there too. Consoles are doing just fine.

Writing is on the wall. 26 games published for PS5 vs 200+ PS4. Outside of the Switch, it looks like the fork has been stuck for Sony/MS consoles.

Or maybe they just make a lot more money skimming 35% off the top of every game sold on the PS Store, especially when the division was being run by people who think making games like Concord is the way to go.
