Why would anyone not just buy a Steam box when it's released at this price point?
steambox is surprisingly similar specs, and it's unclear how badly its gonna get screwed by component shortages. Sony probably had orders out ages ago. Who knows if valve is gonna be able to release it without pretty nutty prices.

People think steambox is gonna magically be cheaper. It won’t be. This board probably skews toward steam. I’m about 50/50 pc and console. The biggest thing steambox does is opens up the living room to valve much more easily.

It's not that it's going to be cheaper, it's that it offers 100x more than this even if it is the same specs.

I think it only really offers free online which is huge - assuming Valve doesn’t dip into a premium service themselves for online play. And something they need to beat into the heads of people - that is a big deal. I don’t think it has an advantage overall in games. Unless there’s something I’m missing. Media is a wash. I keep starting on a media server. And I keep abandoning the project - I don’t have time to consume much media nowadays anyway.
oh. And mods galore. Most folks won’t understand how to mod. This is assuming it works the same on the future box. I know people vaunt the Steam library but the same games are on PSN as far as most mainstream releases. And that’s the battle. Not obscure pc titles. Though, I think most gaming is dying as a general public entertainment. Keyboard and mouse optionality is better there. I

I think Steam Box is going to do well, but you have to think about the younger generations that just don't give a shit about PC games. They want to play with their friends and they're gonna play in whatever ecosystem their friends are in.
We have a PS5 but among my sons friends we are the only ones. Most of them have Switches, but as you know online play there is akin to TCP/up from 1993. Most of the time they play... Ugh... iPad games together.
I wouldn't be surprised if the console market ends up going in a really weird direction in the coming years. The prices of all this shit is at a point where it's out of reach for most families.
When I was a kid I remember being able to save up $250 to buy the PS2 myself just from birthday money. There's no way my kids are saving $650+ to buy a console. For the switch 2 we went halfsies with the kids so they only spent about 125 each, but it's sat collecting dust. The console landscape is abysmal.

Me and two other friends are the only pc gamers left in my clique. Odd really. Rest are on ps5 with two still holding out on Xbox. My 7 year old is just crossing into asking, but his only friends that play play switch as well. I usually just host parties. I’ve seen the four buddies play an assload of split screen Minecraft this year.
My son’s two best friends are brothers. They’re not allowed a switch or ps5 or pc because their dad had a major porn addiction when he played wow so he (or maybe his wife?) has banned all pc and game systems from the home. They have one tablet. He says he made the call. I told him it’s pretty much impossible to get porn on a switch or ps5 without some gooner level effort.
But this is the same guy that spends hours playing some stupid ass Star Wars game on his phone. So I don’t really take his opinion on games seriously. Upshot is my house has become the cool house since there’s a ps5 and switch here.
Console landscape - it’s been bad a while. Why I always let my shit run a gen back really. I got a ps4 late in cycle and got 4 games. It was a gift. The ps5 I jumped into full force. Most I’ve played a console since the 360.

He’s a good dad overall and a good guy, but yeah. He’s assigning some blame there that lies with himself. I’ve been helping him lose weight but I cannot teach self control. That’s from within. He’s got some other marital issues but I try to stay out because I’m pretty blunt in my marriage and he keeps peace.
Anyway, I introduced his kids to goat simulator.

So, is the PS5 Pro worth getting before the price goes up? I don't expect to see PS6 for a while. My PS5 is getting pretty long in the tooth (I got it on day one) and I could recoup almost half the Pro's current cost by selling my PS5 while it is still in great working condition. Thinking about doing that now rather than going another 1-2 years and having the PS5 start having problems and lose its value while the Pro is now more expensive. It would be pretty doable now.
That said, I'm wondering how much the Pro even does as far as improving things goes. Given how little I hear about it, I'm guessing not much. Needing an external drive sounds pretty dumb too. The word Pro still has positive connotations with me because I had the PS4 Pro from 2016 to 2020 and really liked it.

Having this annoying issue with USB thumb drives and not being able to move videos off of the PS5. I had a thumb drive for years that worked fine, but it eventually got broken. I tried a couple other old, smaller drives lately and they all do this. Got a new good-sized one that is USB 3.2 and super fast, to replace the broken one. Same deal. Internet says I have to format it from Fat32 to either NTFS or exFat. ...well, it's already exFat, so I formatted it to NTFS. Now the PS5 doesn't even recognize it, says unsupported format.

Yeah I think I'll just pay the full MSRP rather than invite in whatever headaches these might be. Surprised to see such sketchy activity allowed to go on in such abundance.
Pro probably isn't worth the upgrade, but it has significant boosts to 8 of the 12 or so games left on my PS5 shortlist.
