So, is the PS5 Pro worth getting before the price goes up? I don't expect to see PS6 for a while. My PS5 is getting pretty long in the tooth (I got it on day one) and I could recoup almost half the Pro's current cost by selling my PS5 while it is still in great working condition. Thinking about doing that now rather than going another 1-2 years and having the PS5 start having problems and lose its value while the Pro is now more expensive. It would be pretty doable now.

That said, I'm wondering how much the Pro even does as far as improving things goes. Given how little I hear about it, I'm guessing not much. Needing an external drive sounds pretty dumb too. The word Pro still has positive connotations with me because I had the PS4 Pro from 2016 to 2020 and really liked it.

I got it when it first came out, but only for my PSVR2. There's some good differences there on the games that support it (GT7, etc). But honestly I would not get it for flat screen gaming. This was before I built my 5090 PC though :p

if you have a gamestop near you they currently give $315 trade value + 10% pro + $25 random ass promo for it ($371), put that immediately towards a pro before the price hike. if they have it in stock, with the price jump people have been clearing out gamestops

i traded in my launch ps5 and bought a pro at release, honestly i notice zero difference between it and a ps5 but people say PSSR2 runs better on it and shit. i dunno, i barely play any games but when i wanna play cyberpunk 2077 this summer might as well play it on the best. I could play it on my PC too i guess but i usually just prefer gaming on consoles, unless its something like baldurs gate 3

nice thing is a lot of new games have cloud saves so i could even xport my bg3 or cyberpunk save and play on pc if i really wanted

I just went out and bought one from Target earlier tonight. That Gamestop trade-in is actually a good deal. I'll probably just format my original PS5 and put it on Ebay for whatever it goes for after the price raise. Wanted to get traded up before the price raise and before the long-in-the-tooth launch PS5 started to have any issues.

Too bad that the PS5 Pro isn't a bigger boost over the regular PS5. I haven't tried mine yet, but it seems there are specific games that get specific boosts, and some of them are pretty significant. The games on my shortlist that get boosted by Pro: Resident Evil 9, Hogwarts Legacy, God of War 2, Horizon 1+2, Baldur's Gate 3, Clair Obscur (this is a big one, I was waiting on this one until whenever I get a new TV* and any improvement to it is big), Demon Souls (I replay this almost every year), and FF7 Rebirth. That's a lot of my shortlist right there.

So far, I gotta say the menus are really, really nice.

* - Planning to get an LG G5 at some point by the end of the year (it was $2800 a few months ago, now it's down to $2200, and I expect it to get down to $1600 by Black Friday). I have a C1 now and I just like the G series a lot more, as nice as the C series is. The G series has impeccable contrast and the brightness pops. Like the PS5 it's another situation where I've had something for five years and want to trade upward while it still works great and I can get back half the cost of the new thing. PS5 Pro + LG G1 is me basically "looksmaxing" my TV. Is it necessary? No. But dammit it's a fun goal to have.

Pro + lg c4 here and it’s been 100% worth the money. Games look so incredibly good and run smoothly. Got a killer Pro deal around the holidays which made it even better

When I went from a Sony 4K LED TV to an LG C6 (the 2016 version) 4K OLED with HDR back in 2017, it was seriously like going up a full console generation. PS4 games suddenly looked like PS5 games and PS3 games suddenly looked like PS3.5 games. Anything with a lot of deep blacks, like Persona 5, looked particularly incredible. Once the PS5 came out, the trend continued. I had friends who had a PS5 and like, a Samsung LED TV and the picture on mine was years ahead of theirs.

I've never felt like my C1 measured up to my C6...something's missing. It might just be that I went from a 55 inch TV to a 65 and it messed with the resolution of everything. Whenever I see a G5 in action it reminds me of how wowed I was with the first C6. I was hoping to spring for the G5 and Pro at the same time so I could just get one big jump and have a better chance of being wowed by the purchase. However at this point I'll need to just do one and then the other, not keen on waiting until the Black Friday sales to get the Pro with the prices going up and all that.

Out of the shortlisted things the Pro improves, most of them I have on disc, so I can't actually test out any of them until I get ahold of a disc drive. In the meantime, the only one I have digital is Hogwarts Legacy, so it gets to be all of the testing of the new system.

Oh, Horizon got a remaster with Pro enhancements? That makes two things I can test, looks like my digital OG Horizon auto-upgraded to Horizon Remastered.

Weird how Horizon Zero Dawn got a remaster even though it's one gen old. It was one of the best-looking PS4 games, I thought, maybe even THE best-looking, so not sure why it needed a remaster so soon. It's one of the Pro-enhanced games so I'm interested to see how crazy it looks now.

i run my PS5 Pro (and sw2/xsex) off a LG G5 i bought last year when it was price glitched at LG for like $1800 for a 65 with a soundbar. the G5 has had flaws compared to previous years when it comes to pure blacks, brightness reductions, dithering) but it seems like firmware has fixed a lot of it. I have a 77 C1 in the living room and I do think the G line does look better but after a while you don't really notice that much. Game wise I don't really notice any diff between C and G lines, maybe a tad bit brighter/better pop. 40hz VRR is great though esp with PS5 Pro, get to run at full quality while still getting over 30 fps.

The biggest difference is startup time, my C1 is 8-10 seconds between power on and me doing shit, while the G5 is literally 1 second. Its awesome.

Keep an eye on LG partner direct, they run REALLY good sales 3-4x a year. I think people were getting 77 G5s for $2100 earlier this year but i'll wait for G6 or G7 models before I upgrade again. Every TV in my house is now an LG which makes it simple.

Oh, one really shitty thing though is the new 2025+ LG remotes are absolute ass, they removed most buttons. I have a LG service remote if I really wanna fuck around but the normal remote is fine most of the time. I run a ugoos AM6b+ box running custom firmware to play 4K dolby vision FEL mkvs, it and the nvidia shield are the only ways to run pirated DolbyVision content with perfect visuals and pass through Dolby atmos audio.

I got a new 4k / 120hz TV recently, are there good/reliable splitters I can grab to plug the PS5/XBX/Switch2 into? I see several on Amazon around 30 dollars, but that price point makes me think they're garbage. Also plenty on the other end (90+) and in the middle.

this is the one i bought like 4 years ago and still using, i moved my ps5/series X directly to HDMI1/2 but run a ugoos tv box (nvidia shield), nintendo switch 2, and pc off this $30 switch and it works fine

not sold anymore but it was cheap. ugreen is a good brand fwiw if you see their switches. Get something that says it will do HDMI 2.1 and you should be fine, just read the reviews to confirm people use it with a PS5 Pro with HDR working fine.

The most important thing imo is I threw out all my HDMI cables and bought 20 HDMI 2.1 cables that had high ratings, all 6 feet, because one bad cable will leave you extremely frustrated when its not obvious its the cable in a chain that is fucking you up. Replaced every HDMI cable in the house so its all interchangeable now.

like i'd bet any of these work great

I had no luck with the cheap 4k splitters. They seem to get too hot over time had fail. Startech makes good odd electronic gadgets and is my go to at work when I need something uncommon. It lasted me until I Upgraded to an onkyo receiver that passes 4k(amazing unit of you want home theater.

This is the Startech splitter I like. Ran a ps5, Xbox series x and switch through it with minimal hassle.

I dunno if your budget would allow for buying a receiver, but I just bought a new Denon 5.1 receiver. Does 4k/120hz and HDR pass through. May have to unplug and replug some HDMI on initial setup to get the HDR to “recognize.”

Definitely not a cost effective solution and I feel like surround sound isn’t as big a deal to people nowadays with improved sound bar and/or headphones but I like it a lot. I’ve had zero luck selling my old 5.1. It could do 4k and HDR but didn’t pass through 120HZ at all without downgrading it to 60HZ. It’s about 6 years old though.

I will note that I picked this up on some sale they were running so I didn’t pay $750. I think it was only 600 or 650. Like that makes much difference.

Sony accounts are region-locked and thus have regional sales amounts that aren't the same. If you aren't logged in you're seeing the best worldwide price.
Companies are picking up the same thing Amazon does and has for a while. The price you see aren't always what others see. Also if you put something in your cart and don't buy it they will sometimes lower the price to entice you to buy it and then if you don't it goes back up, sometimes more than it was when you put it in your cart. Grocery stores are doing it to now, the price you pay doesn't mean it's the same price everyone else pays and vice versa.

I assume the HDMI cable that can with the PS5 Pro is a 2.1. I have the regular PS5 hooked up with a Best Buy 2.1 cable so I can use that if not.

I have an LG C1 and the three HDMI ports are slightly different, like I think port 1 is better with a 2.1 cord? So I keep the main system plugged into that port.
