So is rhea seahorn a dyke?
just started watching this show and 6 minutes into the first episode the scene is her at a dyke bar, the scene immediately before this was a scene which appeared to be her wife picking her up from the airport, so i'm going to assume yes? I'm sure upon further review that will be clarified but the show seems to have went out of its way to portray her as such, painting that picture early on.

ok so watched both episodes so now i know what you guys are talking about.

I think yeah most men would be the french black guy, i know I'd be requesting my harem specifically by name.

And then, once bored of that, or stirred to compassion by whining lesbian, most men would have already been fully armed with firearms. Could of just shot that stupid indian bitch in the face, but first should of executed her whole family in front of her. I guess that's why its a liberal white lesbian as the protagonist because a man would of showed up with the wherewithal to actually deal with problems instead of just bitch about them.

Don't understand why the hive doesn't just kill her, like they have the prime directive or whatever not to kill anything but every time she yells at them and they go catatonic for a minute like 10 million people die. given that they won't even kill animals but will cook them if you happen to kill them, it seems maybe they can't intentionally kill, even though they know she can freeze them indefinitely which would eventually kill them all?

1. Order the hive to stop replicating (if its RNA/DNA whatever) and to kill itself, or otherwise leave the human hosts, otherwise you will scream at them constantly to the point where just hundreds of millions/billions die.
2. scream at them for an hour straight, when they finally come to, make them tell you how many of them just died, then repeat until they accept #1.
3. ??
4. Problem solved.

If anything, it'd be pretty badass to go out committing genocide on the hive mind

I wonder if the new countdown is leading to a time when the virus runs it course and humanity has to decide what to do going forward. Recreate the virus and spread it again, or does humanity as a whole change their ways with this new found knowledge of how things can be.

Guess I’m in the minority who’s not feeling this right now or maybe the show just isn’t for me. I’m definitely not saying it’s bad, because it isn’t.

This show feels very much like one of those last person on earth shows meets the Truman Show, yet neither. Shes technically alone in the sense that shes not part of the hive mind and has her individuality, yet the rest of humanity is still technically alive and always around her and watching her and ready to serve her.

I kinda feel like one of the other 11-12 “immune” in the sense that I really…don’t care all that much?

In invasion of the body snatchers, you’re constantly worried about whose an alien and who isn’t and there is a real fear of being killed. In this theres really no fear of anything since the hive mind literally goes to extremes to cater to your every whim and you can completely shut it down by screaming at it.

I guess you can argue the real fear is that the hive mind is trying to figure out why the other 11-12 are immune so they can “fix it”, thus technically killing the other survivors, but the world is already over. That basically just leaves this as a last person on earth show where Kim navigates the end of the world alone, yet not alone.

I will say the acting and dialog is pretty good and I love the way the hive mind talks and tries to explain things.
The acting and dialog are great and regular people will just enjoy it.

However, as a lifelong scifi and fantasy super nerd it already has glaring problems. Much like the ones you point out. Invasion of the Pod People is a great movie and its similar. But the tension of finding out who may be a pod person based on some small and hard to notice trait isn't there. You have a seemingly benevolent hive mind that conveniently can't or won't kill anything intentionally. But in the very next breath they admit they accidentally killed 900M people so far and that they only acted when unassimilated human authorities discovered their existence. They weren't willing to play the slow game the very second they came under threat.

Now that they've won and assumed global control the collective hive mind has a conscience about the remaining immune. We've introduced that this amazing extraterrestrial biotechnology is extraordinarily weak to individuality when it expresses itself. Okay cool. You have a hive mind that knows its weaknesses, took action when it came under scrutiny from human authorities, the logical thing to do would be to simply kill and examine the remaining immune to see what makes them different. But it doesn't do that for plot reasons.

This is annoying and weakens the narrative.

Any kind of analysis of the character's decisions is pretty foolish without assuming a bunch of information we don't have. But most TV shows with this kind of mystery just kinda get retarded (Severance) once the show explains why things are the way they are, so it's fun to predict and explain.

So I'll start with my theory and how it explains the hive mind's actions so far:

  • The hivemind is either
    • 1. A genuine self-replicating virus that basically just turns the population into pod people and then uses a planet's resources to start blasting out the RNA sequence to every star nearby
    • 2. A weaponized virus used by a long-dead species of aliens
    • 3. A weaponized virus used by an "imminently" invading species of aliens
  • A: In 1, 2 or 3, the virus must be peaceful, for 1: it's just part of the culture and 2/3: they want slaves. So they can't subjugate, kill, imprison, restrain or in any way impede a creature without the virus.
  • B: In 1, 2 or 3, anyone resistant to the virus are of utmost importance because the secret to why Carol et all resisted the virus might unlock the reason why half or an entire planet of sentient life is resistant to the virus
  • C: The most effective way to research resistant population might be to keep them alive and peaceful.
  • D: In 3, any risks posed by an aggressive resistant would be addressed by the invading species of aliens
  • E: Despite A, in 1, 2 or 3, there is no reason to believe the hive mind wouldn't be triggered by a malicious or calculating aggression into wiping out the offender. So far Carol has only lashed out in drunken and confused anger and a loss of <0.1% of their population is acceptable. If that crossed a certain threshold OR Carol exhibited different emotions around strategic harm, they could change. A virus this effective would certainly have a method to deal with John Conner or Rowdy Roddy Piper.

So yeah, in terms of an engineering project this invasion was a near-absolute success and any issues are being totally isolated and investigated. If you assume a bunch of information the hive mind's actions make total sense. But so many shows only work because there is a mystery and as the show progresses nothing will be explained.

btw: I really enjoyed the first two episodes and will continue watching the show. Should be a great show.

In terms of predictions, I think 3. (immintently invading species) is unlikely except in the finale of the show. 1. (genuine hive mind) is most interesting from a show or sci fi perspective. I think 1. might be "rescued" by a different, generally altruistic species of aliens trying to fight the "Borg" who have taken over most of the known star systems. 2. (Long dead aggressive species using it as an invasion force) would be kinda lame.

We'll see how it turns out, but Rhea Sheehorn's character is definitely no Mary Sue teaching us how progressive ideals are the optimal choice. She's a deeply flawed character that was miserable, bitter and petty even before the apocalypse when she had love, fame and money. Now she's the lone survivor grappling with the loss of the only person who loved her and she's basically on suicide watch with every character and the audience totally prepared to understand why she would try to kill herself.

Ok I guess it's just her ugly face that makes her look fat. I guess she can't get lipo on her ugly mug. But yes I haven't fucked a chick that ugly in the last 30 or so years since I've been out of the military. Some of those army bitches were unfortunately as ugly as this.

The Hive straight said that its not an alien. Its the application of biotechnology, but of extraterrestrial origin. It's not a sapient Hive Mind in and of itself. Its biotech that allows for the unification of like minded species. It sort of worked on rats. They might need to explain why the rat upgraded its rodent intelligence enough to play dead for an ambush attack.

I come at this from the perspective from voarciously consuming scifi for decades. There isn't some totally unique angle that will come completely out of left field here. At this point we all know the kind of story and that it will follow general tropes. The question is how well it executes it.

In this case I agree it will be most interesting if this is truly just the biotechnology of an alien species that might have been naturally hive minded and thought wow, its pretty fucked up other species don't have this huge advantage we have and instead fight and kill eachother like retards. Never working together or anything. Let's provide it to them for the greater good and unification of all beings. But of course this perspective ignores the beauty of human independence and creativity. Flaws and all.

The Andromeda Strain for example. Despite all of the death and harm it caused, was implied to be a data storage system of an alien species. Not some intentionally deadly virus.

The rat didn't need to have upgraded intelligence or anything just planted with the idea to play dead and infect the first human like a parasite can control insects or small mammals. The fact the virus did that is only known to the audience and I wonder if its a wink and a nod to us that the hivemind is not telling Carol the truth.

As for why not kill off the immune, it obviously could if any of them became too much trouble, but I look at it as overcoming its weaknesses is vastly more important then losing say 5% of the infected populace for when it inevitably constructs the dish (which the scientists theorized would need to be the size of a continent) and power source (also theorized to be impossibly large) required to send a signal to the next planet. In a way its already overcoming them, its causing a person who can literally fuck with it anytime she wants to stop because it is making her feel guilty for killing 10 million "permanently" infected out of 7.25 BILLION. Its such a comically large number all working towards a goal that IDK if it would even notice. Its using her humanity against her, and really if Carol wanted she could work with the others to permanently "freeze" the hive (not that they want to atm however)

One of the best part of this show is watching everyone just do their job. Everyone is perfectly trained and perfectly executing everything in an almost robotic function. It was very cool watching Pirate lady go from corpse retrieval to Cargo Flyer to hydration helper. And watching people from all over society just immediately take over the job of the other was pretty cool. Definitely a neat cinematic experience.

I'm not sure the hive mind is evil, but it's going to be a philosophical question of is "peace" better than individuality and personal freedom. I'm waiting for the COVID mask comparison from the usual suspects, but I guess they're not there yet.

I'm guessing each time she shook up the hive with her anger she started fragmenting the core and some individuality was coming out. The last glance from Pirate Lady kind of hinted that individuals, whether the true individual or some sort of fragmented psyche was happening and maybe we'd have a civil war or at least a debate within the hive about what's going on.

Her face is weird in that sometimes she looks smoking and sometimes she's a butter face. Was definitely pretty fuckin hot in better call Saul.

She's nowhere remotely near fat though.

We watched people go catatonic then either wake up or die. Do we know for 100% certainty the rat was "playing dead" and not just catatonic, then happened to wake up and instinctively bite ?

Vince has to be trolling us with the other immune openly wanting to lose their individualism. The indian screaming that Carol is the bad person when the entire planet was subjugated and a billion murdered was also hilarious. If Carol went berserk at that point and turned the lunch into a red wedding it would've been amazing.
