I was thinking babies. Did they show any infants-toddlers? Indian chick has the young son who is turned..maybe hes supposed to represent children..or maybe he's left alone because he specifically comforts one of the immunes...but what about babies? Nothing but a resource drain on the hive mind. Wouldn't surprise me if they were the first tossed into the mixer

in what scenario do they need to propagate the hive at the current human population levels?
If its a bioweapon to enslave a planet for an alien species to use as a labor force? Then why release all the animals? Why do no harm to other living things? obviously they can't feed the 7 billion survivors with these restrictions in place so your slave population is gonna be mostly dead by the time the aliens arrive.
If its not an alien bioweapon meant to enslave, then what is its purpose? To wipe off intelligent life/threats so an alien can claim the resources of the planet? A naturally evolved hivemind species that just wants to live in peace and harmony and spread its genes throughout the galaxy? Either way there is no need (and more importantly, no ability) to maintain current human population levels, most of the people need to be culled, and its most efficient to start with the useless mouths like toddlers and below. Even if it wants to maintain a small human presence it can easily produce a few offspring every 5 years for replenishment stock, once the population is stable and its already accomplished whatever its main goal was.
Edit: im not saying they are gonna kill anyone, they can't. But since there isn't enough food to go around, where human beings would prioritize women and children eating first, I think the hive will let them children/eldery/etc starve. For example, I rewatched the opening scene and there was only 4 patients wheeled out of that hospital, one of which was zoshia. one was on a stretcher, one old man in a wheel chair, and another who was fully ambulatory. It could be just lack of extras or foresight for what is just a set piece shot, or it could be a hint that their idea of triage is in fact alien and lacks humanity.

Supposedly there is no known limit to intelligence. A brain is a neural network that makes intelligence. Two brains linked would be a larger neural network. Every brain on the planet would/should make a super-intelligent network the likes we should not be able to even imagine (which is a huge problem for a writer trying to write something so powerful).
It's a direct analogy to how the "father of AI" Geoffrey Hinton (and others) explains it, when asked about how a rogue general AI would take over. Something to the effect of there is no way he can predict that because it would be so smart as to defy any reasoning he has the ability to do.
That means, for the hive-mind that's primary programing is to spread it's virus better, it should want to become as smart as possible. Ultimately equating to maximizing the population under it's built in parameters (safeguards (Asimov's rules)).

well they've already shown that they retain all knowledge from the hive despite the bodies dying, so as far as software they are maintaining it all already. Not like the memories or insight from an infant is going to be the thing that cracks the code.
You are arguing that they would want to maintain as much hardware as possible, and sure, to an extent, but you have very limited server capacity and have hamstrung your ability to build out space or increase power, you've actually crippled your power output, so you're gonna have to let at least 50% of the hardware wither on the vine. (in reality like 90%, but its TV so they'll handwave it).

i did rewatch the opening sequence to see how anyone could have missed this stuff....didn't see how you could have..but I did pick up on something I didn't catch the first time. The signal was an extremely narrow beam aimed directly at earth (so it wasn't randomly omindirectional broadcast out into the ether) and it was from 600 light years away, which means they didn't detect any of our radio waves to know we were here, the aliens (or their AI overlords they used to control) must have scouted us out, it wasn't by happenstance or random.
They don't specify but Google says Kepler 22b is the "earth like" planet that meets the distance criteria and they do talk about what it would take to have sent the signal..."an antenna the size of africa" and the power constraints to have gotten through their atmosphere to have gotten it out to us

While the over the top food debate is beyond tiresome, it should be easy for them to sidestep the whole "we cant harvest the corn and soybeans because it murders millions of mice" thing by further defining their "safety" parameters.
The "we value all life" can simply be a shorthand said to the 11 survivors to quickly explain why they can't hurt the 11, let all the animals in zoos free, and are vegetarian/vegan. Not as some autisticly literal "we can't purposely hurt a fly."
Something along the lines of the following, but in terms of what level of cognitive ability or maybe DNA complexity is acceptable incidental losses for them:

Another thing I noticed on 2nd viewing of the first episode, they do kind of spell out exactly what it is.
The team at the army medical research lab used the DNA sequence from the signal to develop a lysogenic virus (ie one that can infect a cell's DNA and lay dormat, replicating when that cell splits normally, without killing the cell), which can also be "activated" later (causes the cell to stop doing its normal function, and instead just create tons and tons of virus strains, and then die, freeing the virus to be absorbed by even more cells)
They tested it on macaques, rabbits, mice, and guinea pigs (ie a variety of mammals including primates) and it never did anything, they were just wrapping up the latest round of testing on rats when the rat "woke up" and bit them to start the spread. They tested the same strain on all the animals so it is quite limited it what it can infect...so far rats and humans only, doesn't mean its not possible to spread to other species just unlikely, and not at all where I think the show will focus or even dip its feet into.
So whoever mentioned earlier thinking that the virus was already spread through a lot of the population and just laying dormant, I dismissed that out of hand earlier but that's actually possible, my bad (see how that works?)

the size of Africa comment refers to either needing an incredible power source or alternatively, and more pragmatically, a giant antenna will have a much larger g/t coefficient.
Usually for receive side but applies the same way in this fashion, they are just relaying in backwards in writing.
it’s much more logical to assume a sophisticated civilization has the material and power generation required to produce a signal into a delivery system that does not require gigantic feats of engineering. E.g., if an advanced civilization was sending out this recipe with the goal of hitting as many living areas as possible…it would be a station in outer space, or some type of planet with no atmosphere.
just nerding. One of the biggest problem with these types of shows is that the modulation / demodulation scheme.
A modem, right? We use them in everything. A technology we largely forget…
for intelligence to be derived from a carrier it needs to be modulated onto that carrier, and demodulated on the other side. I don’t believe they ever showered a frequency.
so let’s they picked up the signal in our observable band using OFDM equipment as the most logical choice.
It would be the equivalent of trying to call your neighbor without a phone book, not knowing how many numbers to press, or what page to look at…but this message magically lines up with how our equipment works in a matter of a year. This was a directed message specifically tailored to humans, or it’s bad writing. Probably the latter because it’s close enough.

anyone that is trying to “talk” to us and does it through digital means, has the tenets of how our communication systems work already and should not be viewed as altruistic. Aka, we were already observed and targeted for this to work on our end.
