Never read the books, but I must say I did not enjoy this movie nearly as much as The Martian. My two main issues are the facts the problem that has to be solved is a lot more abstract and sciencefictiony compared to The Martian, and that here we have a Disney sidekick for half the movie. Really enjoyed all the flashbacks and the character played by Sandra Hüller though.

I saw something that was labeled as Project Hail Mary but turned out to be something totally different. Not sure that I’ve seen anything else as of last night.
From a book standpoint and not film, I do agree with
Szlia
though. The Martian was a much better novel and story so I was not as excited to see this move adaptation.

Read the book, my largest complaint was it was like a young adult novel. Fairly large text not that large. I finished it in 2 6 hour sessions roughly.
Woke writer comes through in a couple places, (And look at his bio so duh) I think it suffered a little bit too much rosey optimism on a few points, yeah it's sciencey but really starts going off the rails with seemingly near unlimited cability to do certain things. (trying to not be spoilery about some of the process along the way) Like engineering mary sue meets brilliant scientist mary sue. Like yeah cool he was smart for this kinda theory that's just a guess that is hated by the other science people, drops out of school and becomes the school teacher in high school, and yet he's playing like subject matter expert on far too many different fields. Some of my complaints I think stem from the brevity of the book that could have been handled better/more development via a longer book.
Going to try and go see it next weekend maybe, visually impressive enough to be worth imax instead of regular theatre?

Just got back from seeing this in IMAX, it looked awesome, sounded awesome.
I did not read the books, but would recommend this whole heartedly. It went very fast, solid humor, and not knowing what was going to happen left me anxious in multiple places.
It's a nice feel good buddy comedy in space with the fate of the world at stake.

I did like how he was a coward and they forced him into space for the redemption arc.
I called him eventually going to the alien planet before we saw it, but I got the reason wrong originally.

I read the book and it was "light reading" disguised as Carl Sagan. I enjoyed it. But I would say it's audience is closer to Harry Potter or "Doc Savage" level readers (Remember "Doc Savage?")
I really don't know how they will make it into a compelling film, but I'll watch it when it gets to HBO/Max, etc.

good movie, i remember reading the books but dunno if the books are more hard sci fi than the movie which is wonky in a few areas, especially relativity/near FTL travel (time dilation)/probes (how do they slow down lol) and a few other things. Not as bad as Interstellar's "LOVE IS THE ANSWER"
good time especially with family, didn't really feel the 2h36m runtime. No post credits. Interestingly in my IMAX theater only 10 mins of previews, I really appreciated that and not wasting 20 extra times on garbage.
I think it'll be fine at home, there were a few spectacular visual sequences but imo only 3-4 that are fairly short. I think Interstellar and Gravity are more stunning visually, but the story is much better here. Worth a watch in IMAX if you have the time though.

Saw today; enjoyed. Only complaint was that it was difficult to hear the dialogue, but that might have been bad mixing with the theater's sound system.
The books were harder. I think I recall an in-depth explanation of the Beetle (probe) mechanics - might have been a photosensor tuned to the Sun that slowed down the Beetle as the relative brightness of the Sun increased or something.
They also entirely cut out the part in the book where they needed to use one of the Beetles to stop the ship's rotation. In the movie, all 4 get launched. IMO, the things they decided to cut or shorten were good choices.
Budget of 200-225mm and it's made over half in the opening weekend. Maybe Hollywood will take notice and give us more films like this.

Really well done adaptation of the book.
Only minor gripe is their direction style. They could cut back on the "dream sequence-y" stuff and linger more on the real stuff. Same issue I had with Spiderverse. Subjective though.

Really good interview too actually. Glad I was wrong about the author, though despite him saying no politics, there still was certainly those 2 lines I quibled about. Granted the 2nd one Stratt was upset about, but he had main character lapping it up.

The book had even more flashback stuff than the movie. I was happy with the amount they went with in the movie, was worried they’d have too much of it. A few more minutes of bonding/conversations with rocky about their differences would’ve been good but overall it was a great adaptation. Definitely went by quickly.
