Watched it last night with the wife... we liked it, fun movie. But it seemed a little jovial, a little not-serious, which made it easier to excuse the flaws and think this is just supposed to be a fun ride, it's not trying to be Apollo 13.

I'd call it a recommend, but it's definitely a little more lighthearted than it might seem for a "save the Earth sci-fi space movie", which it is.
I like that Andy Weir is against social commentary in his books. I have yet to see this, but I'm not surprised there is a bit of humor. Remember The Martian was a comedy.

I mean there was a bit in the book where they bring the global warming scientist in. But then immediately after they are telling the scientist WE GOTTA UP THOSE NUMBERs and thinking of plans to turbocharge global warming, so it balanced out.

How is that social commentary? There are scientists who focus on that and other climate models. And yes, understanding what can cause warming would be useful in that situation, like how to accelerate the addition of more methane into the atmosphere or ways to reduce surface albedo

I adored this movie for what it was - the first truly heart-felt, heroic sci-fi story we've had for a VERY long time. I think Gosling was the perfect actor for the role, especially with the comedy they included in the script.

My 14 year old thought it was great and even "got a little emotional at a couple of points". A perfect family movie if you and yours are into science fiction.

I read the book a while ago, and now my kid even wants to read it. Another success.
You got your kid into reading a scifi book, good job!

I've been working on him for a while. I have hundreds of sci-fi/fantasy books in boxes in the basement. It could be a treasure trove if he gets into it. He's read the Ender series, Harry Potter (blah), and some other random stuff.
