There is something very peculiar about this movie. Because all the line are taken verbatim from the transcript, it does not sound like film dialogues. People repeat themselves, digress, get interrupted, misspeak, creating a very unique type of tension you usually do not see in movies. It's all at once hilarious, chilling and confusing, to the point you have to wonder if the strange dance we witness is a deliberate tactic by the agents to destabilize Reality Winner (her real name, because no writer would ever dare naming a character like that!). The limit of this choice though is that the moment in time that is recreated does not conform to the expectations we might have when it comes to a scenarised fiction. There are no amazing twists or grandisoe dramatic arcs, just the portrait of a complex person and the shock between the power of the State and the frailty of the individual.
Both leads are great in their parts. Josh Hamilton manages to walk a tight rope, soft without being sweet and firm without being menacing.
