Your problems prior to getting paid sounded like the intro to a lot of bankruptcy cases. You might consider talking to an attorney and setting up some sort of arrangement with your larger clients so that you aren't an unsecured creditor if they do end up in bankruptcy.

I've had a process in place that protects us and I screwed it up giving them "slack". What I'm doing going forward is no more free time, either stick to contract or get letters from lawyer. Hard to take a tough stance with long term clients but my livelihood does depend on it.
