I liked the remake of True Grit a lot
John Wayne original is superior.
Agree with you about the '76 IotBS
Major agreement on The Thomas Crowne Affair and Ocean's Eleven.

Better:
Heaven Can Wait ('77) - Remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan.
Batman Begins/Dark Knight - Better than the Tim Burton's Batmans and original TV series.
Time Machine (2002), I slightly preferred Guy Pearce's TM to the 1960 one.
Superman (Donner '78) Better than the original TV series
If we're talking TV: TNG is better than TOS but that's partly due to running a lot longer
Abrams' Star Trek is better than Star Trek: TMP, but not as good as Wrath of Khan.

Good call on Cape Fear, I forgot that was a remake. Other one I can think of off top of my head is Insomnia which Nolan made. Though I think Robin Williams plays a fantastic bad guy so that might be the only reason why.

im gonna cheat on a few of these.
Wizard of Oz was actually a remake of a silent movie version in the teens or early 20s or both.
The Ten Commandments was a remake of an earlier silent version also directed by cecil b demile, though i did like the silent version. it had titties and fucked up shit, but the remake was still better because of the strange casting choices.
Scarface was a modern remake of the 1940s version about al capone.
1989 Batman of course. do not watch 1966 Batman.
im going to go out on a limb here and say The Blob remake in the 80s was a better film, but there is one scene in the original that still sticks with me to this day. dude is at the barbers and he leans back in the chair so the barber can wash his hair and the fucking Blob sneaks up the drain and SPLOOSH! it lands on his face eating his fucking head.

ok last one for a bit, these are hard. The Cannonball Run. yes im aware its a horrible film, but that shit was on HBO for like half my childhood and i watched it every damned time it was on. i loved that movie. i liked the Gumball Rally film too, but it didnt have the cheese factor and wasnt nearly as funny as Cannonball Run. Burt Reynolds and Dom Deluise were a great team.

12 Monkey is a remake of a short film by Chris Marker called La jet?e (The Pier). Though stylistically very different, I would say Marker's film is the best of the two. YouTube has several versions but with spanish subtitles. Hulu has it too, but I can't check it thanks to geolocalisation:http://www.hulu.com/watch/215917

La jetee is a brilliant film. If you can see a version, try to watch the original French audio with English subtitles. That was the first I saw, left a strong impression, but there's a English dubbed (not really the term as it's all VO) version that misses an important element of the French.

The French version the dialogue is whispered, quiet and close to the microphone. Gives it such a different 'tone'

Oh and for the thread . . . The 1970's King Kong.

Dawn of the Dead
Bullfuckingshit.

While both are incredible, the original Dawn was a very interesting take on using a mall as a permanent residence after the zombie apocalypse. The remake was just people hiding out in a mall until they couldn't do it anymore. Also, slow zombies > fast zombies. Always.
