I was all over usenet before HTML came along and then for a while after that until message boards got good. But I think the last time I even had a way to access it was 20 years ago. Back then the shit was still free. I can't believe they started charging for it.

The aggregator membership is ~15/yr, Block account is $35 for 500GB (A good 1080p movie is usually 3.5-5GB). I mainly use it for the on-demand movies, which has worked out great with Covid and theaters being closed. I think I re-up twice a year and never have to pay for anything on-demand. Pair it with Plex and you have your own Netflix.

Of course, the USENET you know still exists. You can access it with your ISP but the retention period is not very good and take-downs on anything non-obfuscated is fast. This is why you pay for the block account. Server retention, and limited if any take-downs though it does happen but it is usually a losing proposition for studios.
