Retirement... (i.e. what are you going to be after you've grown up)

Also, why do you keep bringing up your acquaintances and what they have, make and spend? Who gives a shit? Live your own life.
Cad made a reference to overspending and material stuff. I was explaining that I don't do that.

Okay so buy an e class or if you're really worried about appearances a g wagon. How is that even close to 50k a month or what he is comparing himself to?

I feel like I'm back where I grew up on Long Island and people here are acting like the ultra wealthy who get pissed off that they aren't blue bloods so will never get invited to join Maidstone or National so they build Sebonack or Friars Head.
Brother, its contextual. We make that much but we don't spend that much. Shit, my wife LOVES shopping at Home Goods and TJ Maxx for dog stuff, house stuff, etc. I penny-pinch on a lot of things other might not because I grew up lower-middle class and really didn't have much. So, those habits and fears stuck with me. My "need" for a certain income at retirement is, in large part, to curb fears and paranoia.

I couldn't spend 50k a month if I tried.

I'd have a baller month and still have like 32k left.

It's why I like these boards - literally all walks of life. Everything from the degenerate welfare weebs to the degenerate rich, and all the degenerates in between!

Financially, I'm not nearly as well off as many here, so my plans are much more...modest, I guess you could say.

I'm in my mid 40's now, I work remotely most days and my field doesn't pay a lot (social work). When not working, I have a large garden that I have a stand set up in front of my house where I almost daily put out various produce (tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, squash, green beans, peas, peppers, onions and now, a few melons) that are there for anyone in the community to take as they need and I have a small box for optional donations. I have a few small hobbies on the side that I also make time for as I can. One produces a small income (fishing lures), and the other, which I just started, I hope will too. But I do these more for the peace of mind they bring me, more than any potential income they produce.

Once my wife is ready to retire in the next 10 or so years, we will move north to some land I have up there, its nothing huge, 40 acres roughly, but it bumps up to about 35,000 acres of state land. Once there, I want to get some small farm animals and continue to do the free produce, eggs, dried meats (as able), and see what other resources I can do that can benefit those in that community that I know aren't super well off.

My wife's retirement will provide her with health insurance, so the plan for me is to continue working remotely as long as I can to maintain my own health insurance until I die. Which knowing my luck, will happen before I get to do the move north anyway.
That garden sounds badass though. Nice. And 40 acres is a lot, lol. You should be nice and insulated there.

It's wild to me seeing anyone write how 40 acres "isn't that much." I'm 38 and have $120k in my 401k and a shit house on a .17 acre postage stamp and still have $40k in student loans. Assuming I lose half the 401k and have to sell the house, it seems like a completely impossible task to save enough for any sort of decent retirement where I can just be comfortable with a little model kit hobby and a small house and a couple of pets and some MMO subscriptions. Is it even possible at this point if I do manage to get a $100k/yr job like I had before?

Youre in Michigan, right? if so north living is super cheap. we pay like $1k per year on our property there and its not even homesteaded. Its prob 1/2 that if it is.

Yes, our place is in the Belair/East Jordan area, theres a 3 bedroom house and large outbuilding already on it. We already spend as much time where as we can, next month will be busy as well with salmon season. People our family has met over the years out on the streams have access to our heated outbuilding and sleep in there, so they don't have to pay for a hotel and they always throw a salmon our way as thanks. Usually, I end up with about 6 or 8 more salmon than the ones my wife and I catch as well lol.

Just waiting for the day we can make the move at this point.

20 acres was a gift from my grandfather and the other 20 I lucked out on and got for pretty cheap when the old guy who owned it couldn't keep up with the maintenance
and moved out of state to live with his son. The house I have on the land I got luck with again, it was a newer modular home that I put a joke bid on at an estate auction and won for 10k. The entire set up, was part gift and a huge part dumb luck.

I lost my 401k twice due to divorces, so almost nothing is in mine either, i have all that student debt with more each years still being added. Believe me, I know how you feel with all the other stuff. Financially, I'm not set great at all due to two bad marriages. Luckily, I have the home part down and the wife's 401k is quite large at this point, so between the two of us, we make a semi-solid plan for retirement.

Go find my post in the marriage thread. I was in the same boat and had less to work with.

100%. You'll get through the divorce and come out better on the other side.

It's possible, if you're diligent and save. When my wife and I were in our late 30's I also didn't have much in my 401k. (less than what you have, we had some things happen which made me take a payout which was stupid and heavily taxes/penalized). You'll have to buckle down into a recovery mode, so it might mean a while of not having much in the way of luxuriating.

Now, I haven't (and don't plan on) going through a divorce. But from the sounds of things did your soon to be ex have no assets at all so he's just taking half of everything in your 401k? Did he not have one? I will admit that sounds like a mess, but I wouldn't call it unrecoverable.

He had a 403b and instead of rolling it over into his new job when we moved, he pulled it all out and spent it on himself. He has 0 assets other than his car.

Take his car. He needs a few discreet object lessons, IMHO. heh

I sound downright poor compared to the people in this thread (assuming they're not all bullshitting). I've been pretty transparent. We live off about $50k (net) a year (although saying net is a bit retarded, because our tax burden is mostly 0, but we've had a couple years I fucked up and we owed a lot).

You can ballpark about what our net worth is based on that.

But then, I also haven't worked in almost 4 years. Sure, I don't drive a six figure car, or live in a 7,000 sqft house, but I also rarely drive because I don't have a fucking commute like a working class sucker. I wake up when I want and do what I want.

Money isn't the goal of life. It's a means to an end.

Hello, fellow poor!

Yeah I’m around your income threshold as well, I get it. More money would be nice, but I love what I do and that’s worth a lot to me.

mind you, I’d love doing nothing more, but what I do now isn’t bad.

I also only ever made 6 figures for a single year ($108k). I think I calculated at one point my average wage over my entire working career (21 years) was like $55-60k. More than median, sure, but barely.
