So I was looking to see the name of last night's episode, and I noticed on Wiki that Rob Schrab was a writer/director for an episode from each of the last 5-seasons of Rick and Morty. He was most known as the creator of Scud, the Disposable Assassin. That's the character MusicForFish MusicForFish used to have as his avatar.

It turns out he was also also the writer/director of a few episodes of Community.

Episodes like this one never work for me. They don't elevate any of the materials they are referencing which is something the show used to be good at in its earlier seasons. This wasn't painful to get through like the one where everyone had a Kuato mutant or the space incest baby or the Transformers parody but there is a major clash between garbage like that and the stories that are about something.

Yeah the streak is definitely broken. Had a couple moments but overall completely forgettable and the back half was reminiscent of those obnoxious Peter and Chicken fights that went way, way, too long.

Bleh.

I really liked this episode. It was creative. And it wasn't crazy beyond the initial premise, but once it's in place, everything stops being crazy.

Kinda hated the first act but then got really interested when it looked like the Evil Morty origin story. I always thought that it would have been cool to run a little thread through the series where some of the adventures aren't the titular Rick and Morty but instead windows in to Evil Morty's story. The Vat of Acid, for example, would have worked well as one of those.

Then it...wasn't? Except it so clearly is? Rick's eyes even darken to somewhat match Evil Morty's Rick. If this isn't a retrofitted script I'd be shocked.

edit - possible multi-parter Evil Morty origin story to close out the season maybe? Doesn't seem likely.

I hope this sad rick goes somewhere, best Rick always had a goal and working towards that goal leads to interesting episodes. Him just drinking heavily is not interesting.

This season has been great. MortGully is my pick so far, that was bananas even though Rick starting his own civilization has obviously been done before.

Last few episodes have been pretty lame. Spoiled Camp, Rick body separated, and Morty only positive thoughts are all D tier. Blah

Yeah, most recent episode (the summer camp one) was just terrible.

They did have a run there where 2-3 were great though. Kinda par for the course for season 9 of a show, I think.

"Omg we're so high" characters I find close to intolerable even when someone like Philip K Dick is doing the writing. I didn't think it was as bad as some of the worst episodes of the previous few seasons but it was bad.

They have an infinite multiverse to play with and their "high" was just some traditional stoner high, but not even funny. Same with the rich kids' camp. "We literally killed the counselors" is probably the laziest take possible.

I will say, Jerry on the stairs was funny and got a laugh out of me.

But that didn't redeem the episode.
