When you have as much money as Bezos you can waste it on all kinds of useless shit. A few hundred mill is couch change. Washington Post is costing him ~$100mil/year although that he can use to shape policy and public opinion. Tolkien's Shambling Skinsuit is just a vanity project.

Which is likely why no due diligence went into any of the rights he was purchasing-- having Amazon pay twice to retell the same story they had been telling, with just a few extra names and a little more detail.

Honestly - I just dont care that the show exists. How many LOTR's type shows and games have been absolutely fucking garbage over the decades? What I'm more upset about is that the amount of money that is being spent on this abomination of tolkien's universe. Of alllllll the things that could have been done with that money and we get.. this. Thats the real heartbreak in my opinion. At 58-60 Million an episode, and we're on SEASON 3?... All the things that we could have in its place. Just fucking sad.
