I wonder if it is similar to Imperial Palace speak. I recall from Japanese classes forever ago that there were different forms of words depending on who you are speaking to and the Imperial Palace had its own unique set of words and modifiers

Then again, it could just be like what we do for western period pieces: we examine letters and documents from the time period and use that to construct a way of speaking. It isn’t too hard to figure out changes to grammar and word meaning if you have enough historical context

They’ll presumably have documents going back hundreds of years with differing levels of grammar / speech styles. Just like trying to read Chaucer or Shakespeare.

some of the people who work on The Boys work on this show and that last scene came through with that hard... jesus. Young T really trusted that cannon aim.

I played a bit of the 1st episode for my wife. The very first Japanese word spoken was "father". She laughed and said no one talks like that in Japan anymore. It's only Dad. But yeah, she agreed that it was very "of the era".

Enjoying the show so far but I do find myself trying to draw parallels to the 80s version and the book.

I quite liked they portrayed Blackthorne as clueless to land warfare, I don't recall that from previous material but it seemed reasonable.

My one stumbling block to really loving the show is the Blackthorne actor though. The guy lacks any personality and he looks borderline ill.

Listened to an interview with the show runners. They apparently used a really complicated process that involved first translating the English script to modern Japanese, then having an Edo Era specialist in Japan (who doesn't even speak English) translate the modern Japanese to Edo Era. And then a few more steps. Didn't follow it all but sounded like these guys are detailed and did their homework. I think that's clear from the show

I thought it was just a very elaborate "all Asians look alike" joke played on the audience.

My mom's husband (read: not my dad) is way more Autistic than I am. He's read all of the books back when they first came out. Anyway, he was telling me that when they wrote the show, they knew what they wanted the transactions to be in English, so they wrote them that way. Then they had someone translate it into Japanese. Then they took that Japanese translation and gave it to a specialist of that time period to change modern Japanese to historic Japanese. Then they translated the historic Japanese in order to make English subtitles. A lot of steps just to make it authentic for that time period.

When I see him in the show, I swear he looks like Tom Hardy's brother (if he has a brother).

Supposedly, his voice is just copying his dad's, and they're from Devon. I went to university in Devon and it doesn't sound that off to me. It's just not the 'English' accent every villain uses in movies.

Fair point. I just watched an interview with him and he has a totally normal accent so in the same way as they’re speaking period Japanese I’ll accept he’s speaking a 1600’s southern accent.

I kind of understood the 1586 speech. I live up in Northumberland, in the north, and some of those words are still in use, "Gan" for go, for example. There's a definite Scandinavian influence on that language in the clip.
