Too many people are expecting every show, even good shows, to be the best thing they've ever watched. Shogun was easily in the top 3% of streaming hour dramas, just not in the top 1%.

Yep penguin is like a solid 75 or 80 but better than anything else on right now. No tits or ass on a late night HBO show is starting to bother me. 10 years afterwards, using history as a guide, sets it approximately close to the time where there was a rebellion to challenge the Tokugawa Clan's rule and also kind of close to around the time the Tokugawa banned the practicing of Christianity and kicked out all the missionaries.

That makes the most sense I suppose - it was another notable series of events in that time period and allows most of the surviving cast to return. If Fuji actually became a nun, that gives us another character who gives us a POV inside the Jesuit political/religious realm and it also adds some stakes to the eventually banning of the religion since the audience actually likes Fuji, as well as many other characters. The mother of that kid also I suspect will be why the rebellion happens - she will be pushing that kid to get revenge.

Really long odds that future seasons are going to be any good.

Not only is there no source material, but the two best characters are dead - Asano (death tier list guy) and Mariko who was both hot and also carried large parts of the show on her shoulders.

This feels like a "Lightning in the bottle" kind of thing. Season 1 of course was phenomenal. Attempting to carry that to season 2 with the reasons already explained is going to be a tall order. I am happy to be wrong though.....

I cant really think of any show in recent memory that was suppose to only be 1 season but due to the acclaim a second season was ordered and it being any good. Im excited for this but expectations will be low for sure.

Shogun (novel) was based on historical events and the show already took some liberty with the book that IMO improved things over the book at parts, so I'm not too skeptical. They still have a lot of historical frame work to work with and as long as the writers can maintain good quality, I don't see any reason it can't be good.

Although not having those 2 actors will be a bummer. Unless Mariko's friend goes all psycho and starts talking to an imaginary Mariko

I could watch a whole season of buntaro chopping people up and tearing up geisha girls.

Plus Adams and Toranaga are the real stars.

Mariko was kind of ridiculous fighting off retainers like she was some kind of warrior slut. I hate that shit. She's just a dumb whore that cheated on her stoic samurai husband. Got what she deserved.

It wasn’t a real fight with Mariko - they were given standing orders not to harm her. Mariko knew she wasn’t going to win, but she had to put a good enough effort for their plan to work.

Mariko dying there turns her friend against the other lords. The ninja plot wasn’t to kill Mariko (there anyways). The rival lords knew that releasing her was bad, but so was publicly killing her. Abducting her would have given them more options that would have avoided Toronaga’s trap, which is why Mariko allowed herself to get blown up
