It's too bad really. I played the hell out of SC4 and I'm usually into city-sim type games to begin with but I can't/won't plunk down full value for a game that is in many ways very broken. The DRM part of it doesn't even bother me that much, I would forgo that for the newest generation SimCity but not when it's in this state. Hopefully EA gets their shit together and throws some pretty massive fixes to make the game worth my time. At that point I'm sure it'll be discounted somewhat anyway which will make it an easier purchase.

The online aspect excited me because it's somewhat lifeless designing a huge megalopolis all by your lonesome. Having another player controlling 2 of the tiles in the region opens up the opportunity for rivalry and cooperation, but they need to focus on adding elements to this aspect of play. It's not significant enough as is to warrant many of the reductions and aesthetic differences (open spaces between tiles).

Having never played SC4, should I put this aside and play that until things are fixed? Is it vastly superior?

Meh. It's so old. A lot of the activity is pretty mundane, and some of it is absurdly anal. It is not in any way vastly superior, but it has some upsides depending on the focus of your interest in SimCity.

That kind of deception is why people hate EA(Maxis?). I don't know why they keep behaving like this. Their corporate culture needs some work.

Anything new been posted or hinted of a upcoming patch , scouring their forums and nothing new besides a stupid webpage to see if servers are up. The fuck do we need that for , isnt that what the game launcher does anyways so not seeing the logic behind that dumb fucking webpage.

What are the chances someone will emulate servers in the future ?
Very high. But like all online games the emulation will be incomplete. However for simcity because the amount of information the server needs to provide is so minimal you could easily have reasonable gameplay with a very dumb server. Really the big question is how much effort modding groups will go to in order to create a SimCity server and how much effort EA lawyers will do to shut it down.

I'd go into more detail but with how broken the game is it's hard for me to determine just how much intra-regional mechanics are there. You obviously have shit like gifting, tourism and visual display but beyond that I really can't tell.

Should having hour long play limits during the beta been a warning sign? It seemed like a very secret, restrictive beta compared to most other games. We saw the same thing with MMOs: the ones that turned out terrible are the ones that strictly limited information release and had short, limited betas.

It seems like some (one?) Maxis people are secretly leaking the truth to media. This is the 2nd time. Maybe Maxis knew the game was incomplete, wanted more time to work on the AI, etc, and EA forced them to release. Wouldn't be a surprise. Maxis generally makes good, solid games, so something this dumbed down might be a compromise due to time restrictions enforced by EA. After all, if you look at a situation and determine the best decision, you can guarantee EA will do the opposite.

I wouldn't be surprised if EA wanted something like The Sims model, the base game works, but expansions can be added all over the place. Ingame ads, maybe some corporations will want their chains in the game and so on ...

How has it effected your traffic? Do people try to leave your city and just drive around in circles?
Some do as usual, but also no. There is nothing unusual or crazy going on that says omg I need to reconnect to the outside world right now because disconnecting it fucked it up!

I have no idea wtf is going. Made a city centered aroudn tourism, and i was getting mad $$$ setting up events and whatnot, tourists were flowing all over. All of a sudden, interest for the shows dropped to barely anything. I have 100k pop, minimal traffic congestion, no problem in the city, there is just no tourists flowing in anymore AT ALL. I destroyed most of my cultural attractions, re specialized to casinos, and same thing, not a single tourist into any of the casinos.
I have no clue what the fuck.

I think the server issues just might be a boon to EA. Everyone is up in arms over that and probably paying less attention to how terribly designed the AI is. This sort of thing on a smoothly-launched game would be catastrophic to the game. Instead it doesn't get all that much attention.
Chances of this being intentional (shit server issues) because they knew (how could you NOT) that their game was bugged to shit and not very good, allowing them to take the heat off to "fix" things; aka, live beta.

I believe casinos/tourism are known to be bugged at this time.
