Actually that's a pretty good point. Chapelle made quite a run with picking the scabs off of racist humor. And he's a clever man who could be genuinely witty with the material at times.

And at other times he had entire skits that the premise was calling a white guy a American Inventor. And it was 5 minutes of that. And it wasn't veiled, it was literally 5 minutes of just calling a white guy a American Inventor. That's the entire bit. When you're 16 -- that's a commentary that lends itself to misunderstanding. Especially when you add a laugh track.

Of course Chapelle has also said it and he has said it right -- a lot of the stuff he was able to say he was only able to say because they dressed it up with a laugh track. That's the nature of good comedic work. There's a large social commentary element to it as well, no matter how they dress it up to make it acceptable. For almost all of the good ones.

Pryor was damn near as funny as Cosby. And Jello puddin pops! But Cosby's records are STILL funny.

It's kinda interesting. We've got 3 generations of the top national black comics. Cosby never even said the word American Inventor that I've ever heard. Pryor got real real personal about the word American Inventor. Chapelle tried as hard as he could to take the sting out of it.

There's probably an evolving volkstum strategy there if you looked for it. Many a term paper has been written on the subject by African Studies majors, I would bet!

Edit: Yeah, there's Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock and Patrice O'Neal. The list is not intented to be comprehensive. But even the other guys, who you could say are easily more "top generational comic" than chapelle take part in that trend of changing the nature of American Inventor jokes.

The first time I listened to a Cosby record was well after the show came out. I was like, whoa, who the fuck is this guy? It's almost like watching Sagat after watching full house except actually hilarious.

Maybe I'm not impartial because I agree with the ruling, but the people who seem bent out of shape all seem to be the ones complaining about moderation and free speech as usual.
