The phone is slightly intriguing - 500 bucks for a made in America phone with some flagship level specs (although the SOC isn't listed) and it actually has a headphone jack and sd card slot. I wonder what company actually designed and is building this thing. I can't tell if you can buy it unlocked or if the price is so low because it's baked in to a contract - looks to be the latter. With all the crap the Trump organization hocks, probably best to avoid.

The telemedicine stuff might be intriguing. Other than Gold it's a nice looking phone and I would have bought one for the SIM card slot and headphone jack if I didn't buy the newest pixel when it came out.

I got my pinephone today. It is a bit rough around the edges but we made a successful test call with it.

It is running some kind of kde plasma and I think manjaro. This is on the emmc. I think I might try arch on a microSD card.

One short 10ish minute call dropped the battery 20%, so the battery is not great.

I didn't get a charger with it, so I'm using the old flip phone charger. It comes with a cool little hub bar that can take usbc power and has hdmi out and 2 regular usb for mouse and keyboard. I'll be usin that tomorrow to work on it.

I guess I need a new phone. My 2 year old Motorola Stylus has randomly started rebooting and announcing "Hello Moto" for no apparent reason. I reset it completly and it still does it.

It is a fully open phone you can install whatever you want on.

Since above I've put a different OS on a miniSD and have been booting that to see if I like it. It is arch with phosh or something like that? I like it alot more than plasma.

Some of the apps are gnome based and I was really expecting more command line support. Figured I could put all her contacts in via ssh, and I did eventually but it was a pain. Had to create a fake vcf or something file to import them.

The only downside so far is my mum got a call this morning and answered it, and the process just froze. It wasn't systemwide, I could still ssh in and do stuff, so I think it was just the phone app itself. Hopefully that's a rare problem.

Eww stores, yea I doubt that would work on arch.

Old people and touch screens do not mix. Having trouble with that.

No concept of tap, she wants to put her finger through the screen and smash it. The phone ends up reading it as a drag.

My mom is getting better but it still frustrates the hell out of me watching her use her phone. If it doesn't instantly do what she expects then she just starts wildly swiping in random directions and ends up somewhere random and then she's like "Why'd it do that?"
