Tangled was (then) infamous for not being profitable in the theater, especially as a movie aimed at the Disney base (vs a failure like Treasure Planet); that there's been no real talk of the likes of The Princess and The Frog indicates (some chunks of) Disney do actually look at the Disney+ numbers for watchtimes in the various eras.

the next Snow White

This is such a bizarre merry-go-round.

Make a movie about a beloved story, cast a woman or minority to play a beloved character (a Latina as Snow White, a woman as a male lion who is literally supposed to be Jesus). Then when there's an inevitable negative response, call everybody racist or sexist. Then the movie comes out, completely tanks, and they move on to the next one.

"It's not a big deal!" they say in between calling everyone racist or sexist. Well, clearly it IS a big deal to fans of these properties, because their movies keep losing hundreds of millions of dollars.

I mean. I'll be surprised if Lilo and Stitch doesn't bring in a truckload of cash.
Lilo & Stitch is big with all my tier 3 Asian friends and their kids.

My tier 1 Asian friends not so much. Their kids are too busy learning a third language and playing tennis.

The opening weekend of the Minecraft movie is going to nearly double the final domestic output of this film. It's not some amazing movie, either, but it knows its audience and tries to service them instead of something else, at least.

There's not much to see or say - the initial box office was disastrous, and after the second week didn't have better than average legs, ruling out a Mufasa-style crawl to break-even, everyone (even in Hollywood) gave up any pretense the project as a whole won't lose $100M+, even after including Disney+ 'licensing' rights. (That money goes from Disney to Disney and doesn't really change the overall situation, after all.)

Even by Hollywood accounting standards, writing off $100M+ isn't easy, hence why Disney performatively put the Tangled remake was put on hold, while they wait to see how the Lilo & Stitch numbers turn out.

I still think Lilo & Stitch and Hercules can turn out small profits, but if the only window of Disney movies that can have profitable remakes are the blockbusters released between '89 and '02, that had a generation of kids constantly rewatching them on VHS/DVD, then Disney has just about mined that territory dry already.

They are WAY past losing only $100M. They are WAY past losing only $250M. They need $700-750M to break even. They won't crack $200M. At this point, they need to dump Iger and everyone in charge of movies. Cancel all current projects and hire a real studio exec.

Floors me that Disney can chalk up billions in movie losses and no one bats an eye or gets fired over it.

Disney is no longer the Juggernaut it was 10 years ago.

It's only a matter of time before you start seeing lay offs and reform. They don't have much of choice anymore.

What happened to Ubisoft will also happen to Disney.

They put out mid and not so blatant woke crap between the insanely horrendous stuff and moron consumers eat it up.

Stop giving them money for ANYTHING even a “good” movie- no it does not and never will “show them” that by supporting the “not (as) woke” we dont want “the more woke” stuff- they just take it as loss leaders and make more crap

Stop

1) Because Disney is a vertical corporation, their accounting can break out the costs any way they want for a specific _project_, by paying for streaming 'rights', base IP for park exhibits, or whatever else they can come up with.

2) But on a _corporate_ level, a loss is a loss... which is why they canned Chapek not too long ago and Iger continues to cut headcount. The occasional massive hits in the Deadpools and Avatars do muddy the overall waters.

As to specific dollar losses, the accounting again makes specific conclusions cloudy. For an informed amateur opinion, I would go with something like

which has, as of last week, an estimate that Snow White as its own project at a $115M loss, mostly bailed out by an estimated $130M of video on demand and Disney+ rights. But at least as of the end of last weekend, Disney as a whole will lose more like $300M, minus whatever DVD or VOD revenue it brings in.

the next Snow White

I read all of The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe books back in elementary school. I remember the name Aslan, but that's about it. Oh yeah, one of the books was called Prince Caspien. Something like that, at least.

I have no doubt thats just the first in a long line of subversive bullshit.

It'll be interracial, LGBTQ, the White Witch did nothing wrong from start to finish.

Its weird, I should be madder. These are great childhood memories and some of the last vestiges of Christian storytelling in modern western culture. But after they've raped and murdered the first hundred childhood memories and are prancing around in their skin suits, its just hard to even work up the energy for case #101. Its like yes this is bad too...
