Enterprise was Berman/Braga's attempt to reboot the franchise. It's all based on the events of the TNG movie First Contact, where the Borg go back in time and the crew of the Enterprise interact with Zephram Cochrane and make sure he makes his first warp flight. That's why Enterprise was so different from previous series. It didn't even have the Star Trek name at first; it was just called Enterprise.

Ratings continued to drop over the first three seasons, mostly due to the changes to canon and overarching plot of time travel trumping space exploration. By season 4 they had a new show-runner who mostly dragged Enterprise into continuity with TOS and the rest of the series, but by then it was already too late. Season 4 was good stuff. The rest was meh.

Enterprise kind of feels like Abrams movies without the budget. Its star trek... But its too different for purists. I enjoyed what I saw of it but it wasn't a must see show for me so I missed most of it. The evil universe episode was great though
Too different for purists? Who gives a shit? They're bad movies by any measure except for maybe the acting(minus Pine). I'm glad they have different writers because that was the source of most of the problems, but I doubt these guys will be much better.

Enterprise was not a reboot. Nor was it based on First Contact. It borrowed a couple episodes from some frozen borg from First Contact, but that's it.

The events in First Contact changed the timeline. That's why there were frozen Borg in Enterprise. Hell, they even mention Zephram Cochrane talking about cybernetic invaders from outer space in one episode. That was the excuse for many of the canon changes in Enterprise, with the rest explained away by the temporal cold war.

So? The breadth and scope of the changes is what defines a reboot, not the cause.

Besides, Enterprise debuted between Insurrection and Nemesis. No reboot.

all of the movies except for the wrath of khan were fucking terrible. watch that movie, the original series, and TNG, and you'll be fine.

No DS9? It's the only Trek series I've watched in full (working on TNG now), and I really enjoyed it.

fuck no. i never got into deep sleep nine. my brother watched it and said the last few seasons were pretty good with the war with the Cardassians, but i could never get into it. by far the best writing for any of the shows was TNG.

I guess it depends on what you're after - I liked it for the character development and story arcs, compared to the ''crazy space problem of the week'' style TNG, where nothing ever really seems to change (so far, I'm still watching it).

Just skip forward until Worf joins the show. That was the turning point of enjoyment for me.

Once Gene went to that Great Holodeck in the Sky, DS9 was able to do two things that he wouldn't let them before: have persistent storylines, and allow some level of conflict and imperfection in characters. (Which is why we got a Ferengi main character) Gene's 'vision' was of a Trek where each episode was a new adventure, with no connective tissue to the episodes before, and that all war, famine, greed, ambition, lust and pretty much any other trait that makes for interesting TV was out.

in Roddenberry's defense imo it is important to have something like that. Millions of scientists, engineers, doctors, etc are where they are because of Trek and the utopian vision it said was possible. Millions of people who were bullied or alone or looking for a role model felt like there was a good future out there because of Trek.

While as an adult I love all the cynical, dark movies and shows like Hannibal, GoT, Fringe, etc I do wonder sometimes if our entertainment has gotten way, way too "realistic" to keep the imagination of kids lost for an hour or two in a perfect world. The only two shows I can think of that are something Roddenberry would like are Once Upon a Time and Parks and Recreation, and the only movies that come to mind are cartoons and... ugh, the Star Wars prequels.

I really don't understand people suggesting coming in at season 4. The show was always solid with a few stinkers here and there in the first 2 seasons. TNG was the exact opposite with few good episodes until season 3 and season 7 was a pile of shit for the most part.

Oh, I agree and I appreciate what Roddenberry was trying to do. The issue is that usually men of Vision(tm) tend to get fixated on it. The concept of humanity banding together could have easily meshed with continuity or conflicts between characters, and still allowed all the pocket protector nerds to feel like someday THEY'D be able to jizz into a hard-light sexybot in a self-cleaning room (instead of a crusty sock while mom watches Dallas in the den. Or maybe that was just me.)

Star Trek 6 was the best movie.
fuck you. 6 was like a cheesy nancy drew novel. they even had the fucking scooby doo ending in it where the klingon was actually a human wearing a mask (which they subsequently removed from the movie).

The human masquerading as a Klingon was actually a Changeling! *insert Eric mind blown .gif here*
