I am so disappointed right now. This movie was almost prequel bad. I just can't believe the choices they made and how disjointed the first 30-40 minutes were.

Off the top of my head here are my biggest issues or at least the ones that made me groan...
  • There is no gravity in space, how the fuck did those bombs fall on the Dreadnaught?
  • Leia flying through space
  • Luke milking that Sea Cow Thing
  • Luke Spear Fishing
  • Chewie was just a throw away character
  • Benicio's characters speech tick
  • Why was Phasma even in this movie?
  • Yoda Force Ghost lightning???
  • The whole Speed Theme with the ships running out of fuel.
  • Poe showing zero remorse for getting all the Bomber Pilots killed
  • Poe's whole character
  • The reveal about Rey's Parents felt like misdirect and we don't know the real answer yet, either way it was lame
  • Thew lack of Origin Story for Snoke
  • Snoke going out the way he did... more on this below
  • The fight against the Praetorian Guards, let's broth kill 3 of the 4 we are fighting and struggle with the last one... WTF?
  • When did Jedi' become David Copperfields?
  • The HAMFISTED jokes every 5 minutes, less is more. If they cut out 5 or 6 of the jokes it would have been better.
  • Kylo & Rey deciding they had to fight it out with each other rather than talk just a little
  • Rose falling in love with Fin in less than 12 hours.
Overall it feels like whoever wrote this story line just binge watched the first 7 movies for the first time and then sat down and wrote a script, mising all the nuance of what makes Star Wars so cool.

Regarding Snoke, just like the last Dark Side Force Wielder that got cut in half I look forward his triumphant return in the next Disnet XD Star Wars Cartoon Series. I have no doubt that Snoke will WILL himself to live using the his hate only to team up with his long lost brother Supreme Cheeser Poke. We will actually get an Origin Story worthy of the character only to have him die in a similar fashion yet it will be more satisfying. I feel like my childhood truly died tonight...

EDITED: Spellling

100% agree with you, on every single point, and I have even more complaints that have already been mentioned in other posts too. The movie wasn't good. They fucked it up royally. I had the same thoughts about the bombers in space.

To each their own but I really have a hard time understanding the level of hate on some of these reviews.

I will agree, as I stated earlier, the Casino portion of the story was awful and so was Phasma. To me, those were the biggest disappointments. The Mary Poppins was irritating as well. However, you are talking 30 minutes of the whole movie. To me, Phasma is probably unforgivable and I hope Rian Johnson owns the fact that they were just completely stupid in that character arc. The rest was covered up with a whole lot of good stuff.

I think the biggest problem is we expected a certain direction and storyline and we didn't get it. I said in my previous post, it really makes me wonder "what if" we got it. This is what essentially happened...

I wonder if Snoke is Emperor, Super Awesome old Sith 1 2 or 3? Nope, he's dead
I wonder if Rey is daughter of the force or Jedi 1 2 or 3? Nope, she's a nobody
I wonder if Luke will join the resistance and be a super BA and begin training Rey and/or other Jedis? Kinda but nope, he's a hologram and dead
I wonder if Leia will get a glorious send off? Nope she floats like Mary Poppins and episode 9 will have to deal with it
I wonder if Phasma is going to kick butt and take names? Nope she fell
I wonder if Finn is related to Lando? Nope, he's in love with the new girl
I wonder if Finn, Poe, and Chewie are going to be the next Lando, Han, and Chewie? Who knows? Chewie hangs with Porgs now
I wonder if Kylo and Rey are bro and sis? Nope, Kylo is Supreme Leader now and screams inside of AT-ATs and keeps losing to a junk dealers daughter. He did kill Snoke however who again is some arrogant nobody who died to the guy that can't beat the junk dealers daughter

I get it... everything TFA handed us and planted in our minds was pretty well abandoned. Again, outside of Phasma, i'm intrigued now. I don't think I would have been. I wanted Rey to be Qui-Gon's kin honestly and I wanted Snoke to be the ultimate, near undefeatable villain. The more I think of it though, it wouldn't have lasted. They have to breakdown StarWars some if they have 20 years of this in mind. I'm going to stick by that 9 has to be the pay off. If you're going to throw away the obvious, then the unexpected better be freaking good because if it sucks, I would have rather had the predictable fan service.

I agree with everything you wrote. ... but your last paragraph, this is why I'm so fucking disappointed. This was 2 years of waiting for answers to these questions. And they didn't fucking answer them!! The fucking TFA teased about her parents half the movie "whos the girl?" "this light saber was lukes and it calls to you, you know why?" blah blah. Fuck they fucked us hard. Like at the end of TFA I couldn't fucking wait for this new movie to come out. After this one, I don't give a fuck about the next one, there's nothing I'm waiting to see, and there's no cliffhanger. Fuck this universe. Thank god Avengers is coming out. :)

you forgot about Black Panther coming out first you fucking racist

OK, one question I actually did have about the movie:

Why did Luke's force projection have a blue saber? That and his younger appearance (namely the hair/beard color) bugged the fuck out of me initially until we found out it wasn't really him. Kylo should have noticed something was up immediately when he popped the blue saber out considering he and Rey JUST FUCKING DESTROYED ANAKIN/LUKE'S BLUE ONE.

That's what I've been saying in other posts. This movie really puts pressure on the next because they not only stole it's thunder but pulled the rug out from under it. I'm not quite sure what angle they're going to take and I hate that because the fun of having such a fan-driven, hype machine is to have questions that needs answers and people tearing apart every single photo from the set or a word from an interview for the next two years.

Anyway.. another Charlie video for those interested...

Another thing I might have missed but I was thinking about during the end:

Why did ALL the rebel ships have to slowly escape? Only the one star destroyer could track them, right? So why didn't they all just kind of jump to lightspeed in different directions? Wouldn't that have been better than letting the First Order fleet slowly pick them off? I might have missed some detail or something but I scrachted my head there.

I liked it overall, highs really high, lows really low. Also a lot of continuity errors:

- In the scene where Fin is getting into the escape pod, he puts the bag on the ground infront, and then in the next instant it is inside the pod on a chair
- in the throne room scene, you see kylo's lightsaber on the ground when he is fighting Rey for the blue one, when he wakes up it is magically on his belt.
- really didn't like space scene with Leia, only because space fucks you up super bad and bla bla i know it is star wars but I wish they had a little internal consistency on how a vacuum pops your eyeballs and blood vessels in like 20 seconds.
- Ackbar getting 1 line then getting blown the fuck up was Lols.

Overall like the movie but definitely had some problems.

Star Wars: M Night Shyamalan

Twists in the story that don't make sense for the characters, and feel like they were done simply because these guys read a bunch of fan forums and wanted to be able to say they did everything different. Which would have been fine--but now all the shit I didn't like about the first film have exploded into a mess of cancer.

Luke: Dude forgave his father and tried to foster the glimmer of light side in him AFTER his father killed Luke's mentor, Obi Wan, committed genocide on a planetary scale that was so horrific it sent ripples through the force thanks to billions dying, attempted to kill Luke himself, was actively killing Luke's friends and sister, and murdered Luke's adopted parents (The only family he ever knew.).....But Luke forgave all of that and saw the good in his father, and was willing to risk his own life and the fate of the rebellion, and then lives of all of his friends by throwing away his light saber and COUNTING on the good in his father, the sliver of good that not even the Emperor, a far more experienced force user, could sense because it had been buried for so long under horrible atrocities and pain.

But the dude senses some dark side growing in a fucking child, the child of his best friend and sister, and tries to snuff him in the night? What the fuck? A twist just to have a twist, a twist that went against everything the character was and stood for. Literally just someone saying "well, everyone expects Ben Solo to have fallen to the dark side like Vader...What if we had Luke PUSH him to the dark side! DUN DUN DUN! No one will expect that!" (Without questioning the reason why no one would expect that).

Rey: So Rey's ability to speak all languages, fly a space ship she's never sat in, use the force well with zero training ect...All of that is just part of her, and came from no where. She had no lineage, or past that explains this. She's just a nobody that has ended up being super powerful, and knowledgeable. It's not that I have an issue with a nobody becoming super powerful, in fact I'd find that fucking refreshing...I love the idea of someone coming from nowhere, without some great sense of purpose or "destiny", and rising up--it's a story that is not done enough. I like the little guy literally becoming the hero.

However, in order for that story to work well, a character has to start weak, and have flaws which their time on their "hero's journey" iron out, and change. Rey starts off a super hero, which really changes the story from a "Hero's journey" to gain some new qualities for her, into a story about discovery (Why am I like this). Except this movie was just like "nope, still Hero's journey, except we're starting at the destination!". It doesn't work, at all. It's dog shit. This character feels like bad fan fiction, a literal Mary Sue, except no "comes from royalty and is a princess" background in order to toss a twist in there.

Leia: lol....

Kylo: Potentially the only interesting character left that isn't totally idiotic...except for the fact that he is idiotic, literally. Why fight Rey? Why not just fucking talk to each other. Ugh.

It's too bad, because the underlying themes about how human perception is coloring the "force" with light/dark, and the force is simply something that exists, and how religion/ideology can pervert things and has caused all this damage? Could have been a great theme. I mean, it radically departs from the simplistic fantasy serial themes of the original, with dark knights and paladins ect--with very clear good vs bad guys. But I get the desire to want more complexity, and I think that's fine. In fact, despite the shit above, I enjoyed this aspect. I liked Rey's insights into how she sees the force changing how it is. Realizing she is a part of it, rather than it being part of her, and thus the implications that individuals bring both light and dark to things, and all the old Jedi crap was just simplistic teachings of people who were fumbling for meaning...I get it.

But that was covered by the gigantic mess they made of character and motivation. This was such a sloppy conversion from a simplistic fantasy, into a more complex drama (Or at least the back ground needed for it--by peeling away the concept of the force pushing light and dark to allow for characters to be responsible.)...And that's what I'd have to say about this, sloppy and unsatisfying. They took a sledge hammer to reforge the themes in the movie and didn't care of they smashed the reasoning and internal logic of nearly every character that might have gotten in their way. Like most movies that miss the mark--the reason it does is because the character motivations are in service to the story, rather than the story being a byproduct of the character motivations. It genuinely felt like some producer had a bunch of scenes and themes he wants, and to hell with how they got there.

This is going to be a movie I think that gets worse with time as people digest it. Right now, I can see a lot of people loving it because the themes behind the story are "empowering" and it genuinely shakes up the lore of the universe in ways that feel very new and exciting. It's also beautiful, if you pulled out the story, the movie is just gorgeous visually--if you don't think about it, its one of those movies that's just enjoyable to watch. But much like the prequels, its going to be one of those movies where as you think about the twists, and the "why"--it will slowly start to turn sour, I think. I could be wrong and it could get better with time, but I for sure thing this is going to go the other way for most people.

The flaws in this are much deeper and more apparent. I expect it to be far, far more polarizing.

Saw 3D matinee today (seat was 2 rows from the back, dead center, super comfy leather recliners). As the opening crawl commenced, so did the shenanigans. Thug-tard to the left had a cold and kept coughing + mouth breathing. Once about every 10 mins, he would let out a subhuman outburst like "thas wut u get u bitch ass" and "yooooo...that shit was LIT". And to the right were 2 cackling hags who thought any scene with even the slightest touch of humor, warranted loud obnoxious cackling.

Now for my spoiler free verdict: When it was all over, I just sat motionless in my seat as the credits rolled. My first thought was "not sure what movie the critics saw and raved about, but there's no way I just watched the same movie they did."
From a junior Padawan who watched wide-eyed in 77', 80' and 83' to a senior Jedi who watched TFA make its momentous introduction into the sequel trilogy, TLJ was a disaster. The character story lines were astoundingly weak and the direction was just awful. Stellar visuals/effects + sporadic moments of glory were not enough to save it.

The inability of fans and haters to show any amount of nuance and have any discussion when these movies come out is what makes these discussions so pointless. It's either THE BEST EVER and fuck you if you hate it, or it's THE WORST MOVIE GARBAGE FUCK DISNEY.

Like is it possible to have a normal discussion about good and bad parts or does everyone need to act like they have touretes?

I almost don't want to watch this now, and not just because of the negative reactions. The titanic shift from seemingly endless glowing reviews to seemingly endless terrible ones is just fascinating to witness. It has to be a first for a movie like this.

Even two buddies of mine who are both lifelong Star Wars fans and who essentially share the same opinions of each of the prior films came away with completely different reactions.

Same thing happens to me every time. I don't go see it and wait 6 months. I see people bitch about every detail ( which most of them turn out to be true ) and complain about every plot point and when the night comes I do watch it, just like TFA and Rogue One, I tell myself how shit it will be. Then I see hear the Star War sounds and see a Star Destroyer on the screen and suddenly I feel like I am 5 years old again watching A New Hope in the theater not having any idea what is happening just like everyone else because it has only been out a week and by the time it ends I too will gripe at some points but then I will think of how my father and I went to see it and that visit to Gatti's pizza next door and how my brother sneaked me into Empire Strikes Back a few years later and by the time RotJ rolled out I was old enough to really remember things and covered in Star Wars toys. I'll watch it again picking up on shit I missed the first time then return here to shit post and life goes on.

What were we discussing again?

Shit movies have been made for as long as there have been movies, and shit movies will be made for as long as there will be movies. Now that Disney owns the property, there's going to be a fucking avalanche of Star Wars films throughout the rest of each of our lives and long after we're dead. Some will be shit, some will be decent, maybe a handful will be truly awesome. But they will all be impervious to angry nerds who think they're going to vote with their wallets. Either watch them, or don't. It makes no difference anymore.
Till now...no awesome movies.
