This site is much better for figuring that out.

Definitely do this, look up any games you might want to play on it and check the compatibility first.
Proton wont be able to play every game perfectly so you're better off checking ahead of time.

The alternative would be the Rog Ally X which is fully windows based and can be made to dual boot

edit: still big recommend the oled deck though, havent actually tried the rog ally x but might cave on one eventually

My co worker always buys the newest and sells the old one- like he just bought the white one, but he always asks for the highest used rate - he is OCD and keeps all his stuff clean so… better than rolling the dice on the e bay
Never saw the point in buying another Steam Deck for the OLED upgrade, and the color variations seem even dumber, I actually think the black looks better than the white, the transparent black they used on the special edition was the only one that looked appealing to me over standards but once again I wasn't about to buy another Steam Deck just for that. Personally I am waiting for an actual hardware upgrade, hoping Steam eventually does upgrades like Apple does for their iPads.

Don't hold your breath.

Yeah and I'm fine with that. Honestly the original Steam Deck I got felt like the type of device that should last me a long time. I just think I learned my lesson with the Switch how buying every revision is kinda stupid and just me getting suckered into buying what is essentially the same thing over and over because it might look a bit more fancy or have some minor improvements here or there. That and I got the max spec one they had originally for the LCD models so I think that adds to why I feel satisfied with what I got. It's not the type of thing I really use all the time anyways, but I do enjoy having it.

Is there a way to cast this to my smart TV wirelessly? My smart TV doesn't have steam link as an option in the app store. I have an old google chromecast, if that matters.

Looking for an easy solution...

There are devices that have Steam link as an option, like fire sticks and Apple TV, etc. Best imo is just wired with a 3rd party dock so you don’t have to worry about internet lag for the casting. I use the Anker one. Then you can Bluetooth whatever controller you like to the deck.

They sold steam link devices that pipe steam to your tv. Discontinued but they still work. Used one a couple weeks ago for the kids

I think I want to buy a deck but I am definitely hesitant to buy something 3 years old already.
There's an updated one thats a smidge better, or I thought the next one not too far around the corner.

Where can I get one?
Discontinued; you'd have to try ebay. Prices look like $50-100, which is highway robbery considering I got mine for $5. It was tempermental as fuck the last time I tried using it. Other solutions work a lot better. Try the Moonlight app if you have any kind of android-derived TV.

I was going to buy a steam deck OLED over Black Friday 2024, but there was a flash sale for legion go at $399, so I got that instead. At this point, I’m going to sell it and upgrade to the legion go 2 when that releases in the fall (Sep 26).

love the Steamdeck, and would go with one of it had upgraded components: Z2 extreme igpu, 32 gb ram, 1 TB SSD, 1200p screen.

I have a hardware based version of Steam Deck but it doesn't do 4k. Now with my upgraded PC I just bring it in and eARC back to the sound system 65" Oled and wireless bluetooth Xbox Controller and small wireless keyboard and touch pad. Works very well and max out everything in 4k at 100 FPS.
