Yeah reviews aren't too hot for this. Just really unfortunate timing with the component shortages. $800 is what I'm guessing they wanted to launch this at a year ago but over a grand is a pretty tough pill. I'm sure the initial batch will sell out to the scalpers/enthusiast crowd but beyond that, looks pretty dire.

I'm curious what it could do if it wasn't gimped by a 300W PSU.

Full load hardly gets over 200W draw so I don't know what kind of gains you are imagining in this fantasy land. The performance would still be low, maybe it just gets bumped up one or two spots.

I'm curious to see if there are any noticeable gains to be had. I would hope Valve didn't leave much performance on the table in favor of using a cheaper PSU and keeping it quiet.

In the end, I'm more interested in SteamOS being usable on more hardware. If they do get nvidia support worked out, I'd try it out on my desktop.

Component prices are hideous, but even taking that into account, this seems underwhelming.

Obviously a lot of techies will be building SteamOS rigs with their old parts (since they're not playing with new parts), but even with, say, twice the memory (both system and video), would the retail Steam Machine have been viable even then?

I think it would have still been pretty niche- just like the steam deck. But something in roughly the same ballpark as a ps5 but able to play most of the steam library with better frames than the deck on a tv would have been a decent draw for a good amount of people. Given the price now, ehhh really hard to justify.
