My old PC is hooked up in our family room for gaming on the Big Screen. I tried to buy a Steam Machine just to make that process more seemless. Am I annoyed that I have an 800 game library and have been snubbed twice (first the controlled and now the machine)? Yes, but is probably a blessing though. Fingers crossed that the 2nd gen machine that we will see in a 1-2 years will be better and the same price or cheaper.

If you have a modern TV is there a reason you haven't just loaded Moonlight on it so you can just remote play from your gaming PC?

Gaming on the big screen typically means family gaming, I have have found remote gaming with multiple controllers is a cluster fuck. I have a 55" Odessey Arc in my office, so gaming solo already feels like a big screen experience. I also have a recliner in my office that I can slide over if I really feel like poop-socking.

I fully realize my gaming problems are 1st world gluttoneous american problems :D

I have two kids who have friends. And even split screen Minecraft on the ps5 is awesome for them.

More than half the shit that offers local multiplayer on a ps5 or switch do not on PC.

Talk to me about Moonlight. I decided to try and use that instead of spending a grand on a Steam machine. I have Moonlight connected, and everything is up and running, but I am getting stuttering. My wifi is 100mbps, but is that the problem? Do I need to run Ethernet to my pc? I tried capping a game at 59fps and have Moonlight at 60fps since I heard that helps, but no dice.

Sorry to derail this thread

Ethernet is ideal. There are diagnostic options within Moonlight settings that will show your wifi connection quality, packet loss, jitter etc though. Stuttering could be related to your bitrate or encoding options as well.

This is awesome, thank you. I got things a bit more stable running a low demand indi game for testing . My hardware decoder was set to auto. I I left it at that. There were only 2 options both webos xxx.

Network rtt is 5ms, host processing latency 1ms, and decoder latency is 13ms. I assume the decoder lag is still what’s causing any issues.

Steam Machine User Faces First Case of Red Line of Death "RLOD" On His Unit Just 20 Minutes In, Indicating a GPU Failure

The first case of a Steam Machine encountering a Red Line of Death (RLOD) has been reported and indicates a GPU failure.

Anyone who has ever owned an Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 should remember the RROD (Red Ring of Death) and YLOD (Yellow Light of Death), which were encountered when the hardware failed to boot.

The current consoles do feature their own system failure visualizers, such as PS4's and PS5's BLOD/WLOD, but RROD was infamous, as the console itself had to go under a massive redesign to eliminate the flaws.

Now, it's not a console, but a PC that has its own unique visualizer to indicate a hardware fault. The Steam Machine launched just recently, and the first units have already shipped to gamers, but it looks like we have our first case of a hardware fault already.

A user on the Steam Machine Reddit has posted a picture of his unit showcasing a red line of death. He states that the system was on for about 20 minutes before the RLOD appeared. The system is unable to boot.

Now, interestingly, Steam has indicated on its support page about different RLOD patterns that will appear depending on the fault. Since the user's RLOD is appearing from the middle to the right side, it indicates a GPU failure.

This means the Steam Machine will either have to be sent in for repair or the user should claim warranty since the system comes with a soldered GPU, and it's not an easy fix since the chip will need to be replaced. In any standard PC, you can simply replace a discrete graphics card with a new one.

Given the prices of Steam Machine PCs and shortages surrounding the first batch, the user will be lucky if he gets a replacement soon. Steam Machine looks good on paper, but unfortunately, its price is far from appealing, and you can get much better options for lower prices if you want to build a custom PC. Plus, the fact that SteamOS is getting supported across multiple PC platforms soon makes it even less of a reason to get the system now.

Mine popped too. Anyone got a solid review on the controller? Is it really worth 100?

Ive just been using an Xbox controller for years but I'm tempted because I love my steam deck.

If anyone needs a controller please look at the GameSir G7 Pro. It is incredible how nice that controller is for the money. Couldn't believe how much better the sticks were than any console controller.

I expected that to be $199 or something. $70. Not bad. I’m still using a wired Xbox 360 on my pc. But needing to swap to wireless for hardware child protection.

steam controllers still sell on ebay for $200-250 minus the $30 or so ebay's vig, only takes 10 mins or so to slap a label on the box and ship it out. i'm pretty happy with my 8bitdo for forza so still using that

The first steam controller was such an abomination that threw it in my closet and forgot it ever existed. I went back to a 360 controller for years.

I moved on to 8bitdo because I switched to a Linux machine and I wanted just one controller to use across my devices. Xbox controller is hard configured to tolerate a single bluetooth or dongle connection at a time. So you have to re-pair it to swtich devices. 8bitdo you do not and it can tolerate any number of connections, like most BT devices.

I got the new Steam Controller and it's alright. So far I wouldn't say it's worth the added price over a normal controller though, but I just haven't played a game that I could use all the additional buttons for. I'll be playing FFXIV soon though so might give it a run there since that game has way too many buttons for shit, and I think it would be good for stuff like Crimson Desert or something too. Anyway yeah, works fine and so far feels nice in my hands, but I haven't made use of anything a $100 controller would do.

It's also a piece of shit if you don't launch Steam and has some wonky interactions with some games even then(for example Hoyo games like Genshin/HSR/ZZZ have to be launched via Steam to recognize it, something about their anticheat I think) but because I do everything on Steam it hasn't affected me much.

The charging thing is neat though and I've only had to charge it like 4 times since I got it 2months ago even though I'm using it a few hours a day.
