Supercrooks animated series is out on netflix.

Japanese cast/studio.

Part of the Millerworld comics franchise.
Wanted, Jupiters legacy, etc.

Its honestly one of the best of them. I really wanted this to be live action... haven't watched it yet.

saw 2 episodes, not bad. Character faces are a little weird, and its set in America but its done by Japanese so everything is off, everyone has lots of dialogue that doesn't sound anything like what an American (or any Westerner) would ever say. If you get past that its not bad, not really hooked me in so far either though.

Has a Boys / Invincible vibe but not quite as over the top as either, I didn't see Jupiters Legacy but this show makes quite a few references to that setting.

13 episodes so kinda long-ish by Netflix standards.

starting this now.

yeah, in the comic, the worlds were not expressly connected. supercrooks actually came out 3 years before Jupiters legacy.
Wanted>Kick-ass> Nemesis and Superior> kick ass 2>then Supercrooks... then kickass 3 then Jupiters legacy.

there were several implied worlds as things went on.
Wanted was originally the DC universe, where the Supervillians won, and rewrote reality, so the superheroes were dead, or enslaved. the villians then ruled the seemingly mundane world behind the scenes.
kick-ass was a separate mundane world. where regular people start emulating superheroes, with no powers.
Superior is a separate mundane world. a real superhuman appears.
Supercrooks is a world with superheroes and supervilians full on.
kickass 3 comes out several years after superior and kick-ass... and suddenly implies kickass is a prequel to Superior. its the same world.
its not stated in the comics in any way, but the state of the world in Jupiters legacy, does really match supercrooks.

So this expressly stating it is the same world, is a retcon... but an expected one.

ok, so none of this electro boy stuff was in the comic... its a bit odd. while the dark comedy is a amusing and fairly on point... its kindof a giant change in Johnny's powerlevel and personality. comic starts off with johnny as a small time hood trying to rob banks.. and summarily getting his face punched in by Gladiator, a real superhero.
Johnny's power level is very low. no tragic backstory. just poor and wanting a quick buck. and then, spending years in prison, has time to use his mind, his real power, to come up with the ultimate score.

sigh... japan does know what a heist movie is right?
5 episodes in. still setting up backstory. introducing the shadow network like some anime, instead of just having the Bastard and mob..

should have just been a simple oceans 11 or Italian job, with superpowers... but nope..

they are either giving the plan over to The heat, taking it away from Johnny... or, what I'm starting to think, this ENTIRE show is just going to be prequel to the comic. the entire seasons not actually even going to get to the comic.
They appear to be jupiters legacying it.... instead of just telling the fucking story, they are spending the entire season creating a new, completely unnecessary backstory. its isn't AS bad here. its not as interesting as the main story, but isn't great either. The comic story has the hook that Johnny is supremely confidant in his plan. nobody believes in him, except kasey, and hes figured things out. use his head first. it plays like a proper heist. set up. hood tries to use powers to get ahead. fails. goes to prison, gets out. I got a plan. set up plan. dominos fall. oh no, dominoes aren't falling correctly?! oh... but they are.

This is a service able generic anime style adventureish thing..

Also, read the comic first, because this does kindof spoil things you aren't supposed to know in the comic. like, a certain characters "power level". while johhny's power is low, one of the others is MUCH stronger then they appear to be.

edit: and im struggling to finish now, that I've realized its a prequel entirely. theres not going to be any real payoff. at best.. its just going to be the start of the comic.

And... the last 3 and half episodes actually ARE the comic storyline. they do eventually get to it.

its a rough tonal shift as its a notch darker, with more kills. The writing gets noticeable tighter as well.. from the elements directly lifted. The prequel elements introduced a number of aspects that really fuck things up. notably, a personal connection with the crew, and praetorian and the bastard. that they didn't have any connection, and thus the Bastard had NO IDEA who they were, was important. its a huge part of why the plan works. in this, they've met.. the plan totally falls apart when he recognizes them.
and then how powerful Kasey is. the SHOW starts with her mindcontrolling Pretorian, and gladiator easily. straight up showing shes extremely powerful. they kindof make up nonsense to explain her as a failed villain. versus the comic version who just knows how to keep a low profile, and doesn't really want to be super famous. big score? great. but shes not an adrenaline junkie. and with it, again, the comic kindof lets you think, shes much lower level. they even, go "I can only hide1 or two of you in the airport" in this show, when the proper story starts. which is really weird, when we've SEEN how powerful she is. so when the trick gets pulled in the end, you don't see it coming. you had no idea how powerful she really was.
