What will I gain by rooting and getting the Google Store? I can't imagine I will really need it for more than books, internet, HBO GO, Netflix, Porn, Porn, Porn and Angry Birds.

My tablet has always been for convenience, if I really need to do something I will just use my desktop.

Am I looking at this wrong?

You can still use the Amazon app store once it's rooted. You aren't losing any functionality as far as I know, just gaining some.

It's not as bad as it was on the nook early on though. I remember that piece of shit having stuff that was free on Android cost money on the nook.

Yeah you lose nothing by rooting.

Other than your operating system being able to auto-update to new releases of Android. You lose your root if you let that happen.
When you root and install the Google Play Store, you can download Titanium Backup and freeze the updater APK. Well, I don't know for sure with the Kindle, but it works with most other devices.

Good, we can compare some Hearthstone framerates and see if I should return it and upgrade to an i5.
Not sure you if you were joking about the Hearthstone framerate, but it works amazing on this device.

The touch is perfect for the app.
One thing I'm not liking is the Battery life on the unit. I thought the I5 Haswell was supposed to be better for battery life, but it drains it like crazy.

Shame, because it has a beautiful screen, and the sound coming off the unit is the best I have ever seen from such a small device.
I decided to take it back tho, cause the low battery is just a deal killer for me.

I meant compare your good i5 framerate against my ? Haswell Atom framerate.

The Surface 2 is supposed to be a 20% improvement in battery life over the Surface.

I did some more research, and found there was firmware update that helped with the battery life so now I'm keeping it.

It's not ipad levels of battery, but still very good for normal applications.

As far as gaming goes, this thing is surprisingly robust.
I've thrown all the new games at it, and it runs them extremely well at 1080p.
I am very happy with this Surface Pro 2, it is an amazing piece of tech.

Well I ended up returning my Nexus 7 (2013) tablet today. When I first got the tablet I posted about having issues with the touch screen. The problems kept recurring. The week I left my tablet to recharge and when I started using it the touch screen went crazy with ghost touches. The keyboard overlay graphics started glitching out. I did some research on it and turns out the the Nexus 7 has some design flaw that cause issues with the grounding. Google tried to fix it earlier this year with a patch but more people are speculating that the issue is just a design flaw with the Asus hardware. Buy the Nexus 7 at your own risk.

Weird, I didn't like it on the surface but that was a couple patches ago.

I bought a Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 recently. I like it, I don't have a custom rom for it yet, I did root it so that I can tweak it later.

My original nexus 7, the first gen one I got last Christmas was flawed as well. There was an input lag. So I returned it and got another and it was flawless since. I got the 2nd gen for my other son this year and its flawless. So yeah you can get a dud, but if you do just return it and get another. Its still a beast of a tablet at that price point. I think I payed $179 for my 2nd gen one and cant be happier.

Our nexus 7 (2013) works great so far, no real issues. That said, it wouldn't be the first time Asus has had grounding issues. My Asus laptop I have had to repair the touchpad a few times now.

It's an awesome tablet but I don't want to run the risk again of getting another bunk tablet. Going to wait till I hear the manufacturing kinks have been worked out or the nexus 7 2014 is released.

I am canceling the Dell Venue 11 order, I wound up getting a used Surface Pro with the good keyboard for $450. Column what resolution are you using for everything? Have you installed Steam and if so what are some games that are working well as windows tablet games? I have Hearthstone, Torchlight 2 and Solforge installed right now. Solforge doesn't work very well as a tablet game.

I play everything at 1080 off of steam.

I use the 360 controller with it, and the only game I tried with touch was hearthstone which worked very well.

The surface pro 2 was shipped with there newest processor they snuck out a month ago, and 8 gigs of ram.
Damn good gaming laptop which is not what I bought it for, but definatelly not complaining about it.

Been playing Dayz on it currently.

After watching this video today, I was able to wirelessly extend my desktop to my TV from my Surface Pro 2.

So I have my steam library running off my tablet to my Big Screen TV.
Be curious how the Steam OS runs off the Surface Pro 2.
