Were there ever horror games with shitty 2d graphics like this? I don't usually go for the genre but I can't think of any. From my perspective I can't see how it would be tense or scary at all, there's a certain level of fidelity required for horror I think; you have to be immersed to some extent.

Maybe the first Gabriel Knight PC adventure game. I want to say there was also a Cthulhu adventure game.
Probably the best for 2D graphic horror adventure games was Sanitarium, but for the time in the genre it was pretty good graphic wise.

I remember Sanitarium. Looking for the child and discovering she had been buried alive in the cemetery was the real WTF moment back then.

Another great psychological horror point and click was the 1992 Dark Seed. It’s a creepy adventure where a writer moves into a new house and wakes up after a nightmare to discover an alien device has been implanted in his brain. He has three days to stop it from hatching while traveling between the normal town and a disturbing Giger inspired dark world.

I remember the second act of sanitarium where there were all those mutilated kids. My little sister was terrified of one of the kids that I named blender boy (his mouth was all mutiliated). I would terrorize the shit out of her with that game lol.

yeah, and it wasnt actually that fun to play, but the story was insane, and the various acts were so surreal I cant think of many other games like it.

A 90s cult classic I have never played which is a blend of scifi and psychological horror is "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream". I had to mention it because it's such a great title! It's co-directed by author Harlan Ellison who wrote the short story it's based on.

I have never played it either, but it got an update last year to modernize it and improve compatibility. I think I’ll check it out, just to play one of those old point-and-click games with really dark themes.
