I was in 2nd grade when the Challenger blew up. I went to a 1-room rural school that had an apartment for the teacher on the side and a parent called the school to tell us the shuttle blew up and we went into the teacher's apartment and watched the news coverage for the rest of the day.
I identify more with the 90s than the 80s though even though I was born in '77 because I started high school in '91 just as "Smells Like Teen Spirit" came out. Even people who are a couple years older than me identify more with Motley Crue, Guns and Roses, Poison, etc. but it was all Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Garth Brooks for me and the beginning of hip hop. We all had copies of Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer, and the Fresh Prince that our parents knew about and a copy of "As Nasty as They Wanna Be" by 2 Live Crew that they didn't know about.
