Whelp, picked up Fire Emblem: Awakening, Pokemon X, and.... Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon because Target had dick all else that I even remotely cared about. Sadly my Target doesn't carry SMT4 or anything else of note.

You will like all of those. Although you should have gotten Resident Evil if they had it over Dark Moon. You may want to check if they still have the Shin/Fire Emblem deal going. Buy both and get a $30 credit at the Eshop... not sure when that expired though or if it did yet.

Common sense also tells you that the guys at the review sites would be a bit disappointed to get a console that has already been unpacked once.
Do you want to take your chance with the failure rate or with the disappointed reviewer?
If anything, the fact that Sony did not test the consoles they sent to reviewers is an indication that they do not expect it to have a catastrophic failure rate (something they would be aware of if it was indeed catastrophic).

/\ Sony is a large corporation and large defects have happened before and they knew about it when it shipped. I remember having one of their Rear Projection TV's that would shine a green hue after a few hours because the PCB board was overheating. They knew about it. Sent tech's out to fix it. It effected damn near everyone of them, and they hoped it wouldn't surface after careful leverage and meetings to see what would be more cost effective.
It isn't going to be about if they know about it or not, it will be if they know about it but it will be more cost effective to fix.

They didn't have RE (and if you mean Revelations I have that on the X360). They had Batman, but I already have that on Vita. They had Super Mario 3D Land or whatever and Mario Kart, but meh. Rest was basically a bunch of shovelware.
