The point I'm trying to make is that improvements in things like lighting and physics will have more of a noticeable difference to your average gamer than textures going from 720p last gen to 1080p this gen. The original comment that started the conversation was about console graphics being somewhat "capped", and I agree if you are purely looking at resolution and textures. You aren't going to see a massive leap from last gen to this gen in those two things, but you'll definitely see large improvements in other graphical areas.

It's all a matter of viewing distances, joe. 1080p isn't "showing its age" dude. It's all a matter of how far you are from the TV relative to the resolution. At normal viewing distances 1080p is all you need - you can't even see full 1080p detail until you're about 6.5 feet from a 50" TV (7.8 feet from a 60"), which is also about the recommended viewing distance for the best angles and shit. It's why 4k doesn't matter, because you can't tell the difference unless you are super close (too close for optimum viewing distance/angles).

And your average person will notice the graphical leap that's going to happen with full high resolution textures, even if they sit farther than that, because the textures used right now are absurdly low. I don't think you've actually seen anything with real HD textures dude. Try hooking your PC up to a HDTV, run a game withrealhigh resolution textures vs one with shitty normal ones, and you'll be like "wow, holy fuck, I was wrong, Sean is right".

Also yes, 1080p doesn't look very good on a monitor because you're sitting like 2 feet away from it. On a 27 inch you need like 2160p for how close you sit to it.

I don't think most people realize how important textures and other (normal, spec) maps are. They are literally almost more important than the actual polygons making up game objects. Most environmental objects on 360 are using 256x256 or 512x512 maps where characters might get 1024x or 2048x if they're lucky. They're going to see huge improvements and I think people just aren't noticing the difference because they're watching grainy E3 videos and not seeing things in person.

This. Youtube compression is so awful that it makes textures and games look far worse than they are. High res videos from sites likehttp://gamersyde.com/index_en.htmldo a much better job of showing the difference between the current gen consoles and PS4/Xbox One.

There are still plenty of the "average consumer" that have a composite cable from their cable box running into their 55" HDTV and think it looks amazing =)

My dad was one of those people. He had a 480p signal coming from his blu-ray player to his plasma. I brought over my HDMI cable to show him the light. I should say, he's the most stubborn person I've ever met and never admits he likes things. Everyone in the room went "Holy shit that looks so good!" and he kept saying it looked exactly the same, even going as far as yelling at us and calling us idiots. When we went to leave he called me into a sideroom and whispered "hey is this enough for one of them cables????" and proceeded to drop about 50 gift cards he got for christmas on the floor.

The next part doesn't matter but I then went to best buy and noticed they had monster HDMI cables in the wrong spot (in a $5.99 spot), so I got him two 6 foot monster HDMI cables for $12 when I complained. Fuck Best Buy, that's why.

Hey hey now. The xbone and ps4 are basically under powered gaming PCs. The new console owners are, at least out of the gate, like people living in the projects of the master PC city.

Guardian - 'Xbox One and Microsoft's shocking discovery: gamers aren't data'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology...e-microsoft-e3

Another good article.

I whole-heartedly agree with this guy.
The thing I find funny about that is Microsoft is simultaneously trying to replace the function that smartphones/tablets currently play in many living rooms as being the "second screen," yet they are also trying to integrate the smartphones/tablets into practically every game they showed off. They want us to use our smartphones when we're playing games, but not touch them while we're doing anything else. If people are going to be encouraged to have their smartphones around for games, I suspect a majority are going to continue to use them the way they do now rather than adjusting to Microsoft's innovations, particularly since using a second screen saves the primary one from becoming overly cluttered.

The more the fallout continues for Xbone the more I'm thinking it reminds me of the Digg v4 fiasco. That didn't end well for Digg. Luckily for MS, they don't have to worry about the whole company imploding but you have to wonder what the consequences will be for their xbox/gaming divisions.

The pathetic thing is just a few months ago I was sure I'd end up with the new Xbox and now I can't even imagine buying it.

Are there factual comparisons with the PC world now that we have a clearer idea of the specs? Are there even PC motherboards that support that new high speed ram or is it only available for video cards?

Current Intel CPUs are, at the very least, 2-3x more powerful than the AMD CPUs used in the PS4/Xbox One, and the Geforce Titan is between 2-3x more powerful than the GPU in the PS4. In a few years time, the difference in computational power between a midrange pc and the PS4/Xbox One will be huge.

The only area where the PS4 outshines the PC is in terms of ram, but that'll change once more graphics cards with higher amounts of ram are released. Nvidia's 770 graphics cards are already shipping with 4gb of gddr5 ram, the same type of ram used in the PS4 - expect next year's cards to ship with 8gb.

And how does it fare compared to the average gaming PCs (assuming not many people bought $1k CPU with $1k video card)?
