However, one things these assholes don't realize is that STEAM IS FREE. Steam did NOT ask me to invest 500$ in an unproven technology. When steam first came out, no games required it--I could just as easily buy a physical disc and avoid steam. However, steam slowly built it's client base up by offering huge deals and truck loads of little perks (Which the guy mentions). And that's the difference. Steam didn't ask us to trust them with a huge amount of money--rather steam shoveled value at us through big deals, and asked very, very little upfront investment. EVENTUALLY, after years of that, games began to require steamworks, and people began to adopt steam, but only because they built up a stable, user-friendly market.
They are also making the mistake in believing that they can build up like Steam did. He talks about how poorly Steam was received when it first came out and where it is now. The difference is, Steam never really had any competition during the early years. They weren't really competing with boxed sales, but breaking new ground and trying to establish a new way of doing things.

Yes, there were definitely missteps, but it wasn't like people had an alternative and could just say, "Wow, Steam is awful. I'll use Origin instead!" Microsoft doesn't have that luxury, but they're acting like they do. They think people will just accept these "growing pains", not seeming to realize, like you said, that people aren't going to be as forgiving of mistakes when they're investing hundreds of dollars in the system.

Just noticed from a reddit post on how Red Projekt the Witcher 3 devs won't even be able to play their own game on Xbone at release that somehow Microsoft decided anything east of Germany isn't Europe. That's pretty fucking sad. It's like they really don't want people to buy their consoles at all. I can understand the delay on asian release because the system doesn't sell well and what not but Europe too? And it's not like previous gens either where eastern europe would tend to get fucked anyway but they could still import the system and play, nope, this time they get fucked and can't do anything about it.

I do hope they won't die this gen though because them dying would probably hurt the next gen if Sony is all alone against Nintendo, because then they'd get a free pass on all the microsoft bullshit, and while right now they're firmly denying they'd do the same, if they had free reign I'm sure they wouldn't mind.

What is his pre-internet business ideology? so sorry to derail..fuck;;
It's about his reliance on capital to push people toward where his market research says they want to go. The Xbone is a perfect example. He's probably got tons of research indicating digital distribution is preferred when offered. So Xbone is built to take advantage of digital distribution and he intends to probably launch a massive campaign to "educate" people how they really want digital distribution. (Just like they want a unified OS for their phone/tablet/PC ect)--the problem is, thanks to the internet, word of mouth can really educate people on flaws, and make them averse to taking any risk--even if they do, actually, want it.

It's easier said than done, but businesses (Except for Apple and even apple does this to an extent--Ipod-->Iphone) really have to find what people want to use NOW and then use the product (Or line of products) to draw them to what they are going to "want" in the future. So, just for example, they could have released Xbone with "hard disks" that could be resold and no DRM--IE just like the PS4. But then offered a digital account system that gave crazy deals on games BUT those games would require DRM checks to use.

See the difference? They provide a product people wantnow, and then lead them to something they are going to take advantage of if it's open to them. I bet you if PS4 offers account bound games, that require DRM checks, for 50% off through some PS4 store--people will take advantage of it, despite it being the same stuff MS offered. Because they are going to be shown the product is good first and thenBENEFITof the new method second, and then asked to make a sacrifice (No resale) last.

Unlike MS which is asking everyone to bend over and then "trust us" that it's for your own good (And convince everyone with a huge ad campaign that it is, indeed, going to be good--or at least have a decent amount of lube.)

Amusing anecdote time:
I've owned an Xbox 360 since 2006. Note my use of the word "an". I never rrod'ed, I got thousands of hours of enjoyment and spent thousands of dollars on video games over the years.

I did not own a ps2(Nintendo 64), nor a PS1(sega genesis), nor even a PS3. I've got something like 200 games on my steam account.

But like many of you, I was impressed by Sony's E3 show. I actually went out and bought a PS3 yesterday. I figured I'd try to reserve my username(nope already taken, fucking bastards). Anyways, I had heard about Sony's instant game collection... I was immediately impressed, I have canceled my Xbox live gold account, for less money per month I've already gotten xcom for free (wanted to try it but never pulled the trigger, little big planet karting, and the cave, goto double fine)... All for "free" needless to say I was impressed. Uncharted 3 is also free, but since it also came bundled with my system it's redundant. Anyways, I ended up buying season 1 of telltales walking dead for 5 bucks because why the hell not for that price, and then I bought little big planet 2 for 20 Because it just came off of the free list 3 days ago and I don't want to wait a couple months or so to see it offered again, and some swan video game because it was indie and 3 bucks with good review scores and 75% off... Why the hell not. Instant gratification, free stuff... I paid something like 500 dollars in subscription fees to Microsoft, only 1 video game was ever free...and never once did I ever see a discount on a digital download version of any game, on the ps3 I can get borderlands 2 or AC3 for 20 bucks, how much you want to bet it's 59.99 on the 360.

It's amazing how quickly you can lose a fan base. Just weeks ago my friends and I had assumed we'd all be getting the next gen Xbox. At this point none of us are getting it, and we have PS4's on preorder. We likely would've been loyal to the Xbox brand for many years to come had they not pulled this full retard crap, and the sad thing is no matter what Microsoft does to make up for it there will be no reason for us to consider transitioning back unless Sony royally fucks up in the future. To put it bluntly, I think Microsoft isn't taking into account how hard it is to acquire brand loyalty once it's lost to another product that's just as good, or superior. Perhaps they should look at their phone and tablet divisions for a clue at what that looks like.

On the upside, you can again order the Xbox One Launch Edition on Amazon. Either they got more supply allocated to them or people cancelled their preorders...

tbh consoles lost me when Guitar Hero ended. I was never a big fan of either console, but it sure is fun to join in on the bullying

They added more for preorder. I'm betting that half of the day one systems don't get anywhere near release day delivery. They probably just opened up the preorder number so that their total looks better.

what is really interesting is, its generally the other way around. usually its really hard to turn away a fanbase. look at nintendo, apple, blizzard, or EQ, etc. people will defend this shit forever.

MS has just systematically said and did the wrong thing over and over and over.

Xbone kills...

Ok, I'm a few pages back on this thread, so don't know if anyone else mentioned it.

Cute story, but 1 big thing wrong with it. So the mom has no money for internet, yet the son has online friends with Halo? Fuck this story!

Aside from that, yeah. Microsoft kills. Get your kids off Microsoft.

Earlier in the thread (might have been another one) someone mentioned that the reason Microsoft is doing all the online activity stuff is because they wish to become a digital distributor.

The poster went on to say that they doubted they would ever see the day where Microsoft would charge less for a game on their digital store compared to the physical copy in the store.

Yesterday I went to Gamestop here in Norway to buy The last of us for the PS3. It cost 599 nkr in the store. This is roughly $103.50. Did not buy it as it would not release before today anyways. Before I left for the store today I figured I would check to see if it was on PSN. It was, the cost there, 449 nkr. Which is roughly $77.50.

Downloading it now.

Also, should be noted that The Last of Us should get a 10/10 on the basis of having an installer alone. I have an original 60 gb machine and never changed the hard drive, downloading games is horrible considering how large they are. The problem becomes even bigger when usually you need twice the space available 15 gigs to download the file, but you also need 15 gigs on top of that to install the actual file. The Last of Us is a 170 mb patcher which starts a 24 gig download. Only need 24 gig, not 48. Can start to play the game at 70%.

The download is also very fast. Not sure if the patcher is connecting to Naughty Dog servers and not the PSN ones. Anyways, A+ for that feature that should have been there 6 years ago for every game.
Downside is that you do not get a background download as the installer opens a large patch screen with a timer and progress bar on it. But I will pay that price gladly for not having to have twice the space required. I have Dragons Dogma - Arisen installed, and that plus the last of us is 80+% of my hd

Microsoft is so full of themselves its ab-fuckin-surd they have not backtracked.Honestly even if they subsidize their console they are pretty much not going to beat Sony in the race. They will not have nearly as much units available even if they wanted to subsidize, it would be something done long after release date. They are doing everything wrong and it makes you wonder who is honestly making these fucked up decisions.

Typing from my phone because my cable router shit the bed yesterday afternoon. If I had the xbone and missed my 24 hour check in, I would not be able to play any games I paid money for. Sounds like a sweet deal.
