Wait, the family sharing plan was a glorified demo platform? Hahahaha. That's hilarious. I'm actually quite disappointed Microsoft scrapped it now - I would have loved to see the Xbox execs squirm while being questioned about it.

Imagine if the "family plan" farce was released before they announced the DRM cut. There'd have been a hilarious uproar of "We're getting fucked in the ass for THAT?"

Yeah, after seeing the limits of the plan I don't even get why they scraped it. If anything people might share a digital game and then their buddy ends up buying it because he got sucked in after an hour of playing.

The only reason for them to cut the family plan once they cut the 24 hour DRM was vindictiveness. I said that like 10 pages ago too.

They're just mad that their consumers rebelled, so since Microsoft doesn't get what it wants, fuck everyone else.

My issue with the desperate and condescending pressrelease is this;

If M$ changed once, they can do it again. Its obvious that they saw disaster loom over the release and had to change NOW, but one year into Xbones life... not so much. Considering how much time and effort they put into their online/DRM/watching livingroom porn for free/Big Brother system and infrastructure I highly doubt they will abandon it this easily. After selling X number of million units there is nothing stopping them from re-introducing their plans, and the public will have to eat that shitsandwich and ask for seconds.

Nah... you can't sell a machine based on a set of requirements and then suddenly totally change these requirements after selling a bunch of them. It would lead to a class action.

Want to bet that on the box it comes in, there will be a label saying something about "conditions may change", "requirements may change" and so on? That is more or less standard practice these days.

That's different and you know it.

EDIT: Allow me to elaborate on that.

1.) If Microsoft decides later in the game to suddenly re-enable the DRM and non-sharing bullshit that they just disabled, it will change the system that the majority of people paid for. This will result in a huge class action lawsuit and cost the company more money than I can imagine.

2.) Sony removing Playstation 2's Linux support was a financial decision above all. Linux support alone wasn't used by the masses. It was primarily the hacker community that used it to gain additional access to the system.
The next problem comes in the form of many Government agencies purchasing large amounts of PS3's and linking them together via the Linux support to create a powerful supercomputer that was less expensive than a "real" Cell super computer that IBM and Toshiba would sell for a premium. Sony took a loss for every PS3 they sold knowing that they would make this money back eventually through the sale of games and peripherals. A government buying 2600 of them at a time to string together would only be a drain on Sony's revenue. It would in no way help them sell more games. Thus it was a good financial decision for Sony and nothing at all like imposing a DRM on its customer base.

What happened when the PS3 got rid of the Linux?
Not much? The normal class action grumble (that never happens), the normal promises of never buying anything from Sony ever again due to this monumental, epic betrayal of its customers (ooooh PS4! Rock on!), and then....nothing.

Not really, lets say all your "year one" games will work just fine, but games released from May 2014 need the 24h validation due to "publisher demands *cough cough*" I doubt you would have a case against it. "We said it could change! You can still use the old games! Not our fault!"

I don't remember how early the Folding app for PS3 came out. It wasn't too long after release.

I just read-up onto the Linux support thing a little more.

Looks like Sony paid to have some driver for Linux support, and they did it ONLY to receive a tax credit in Europe. After the initial launch of PS3, they were denied the tax credit, so they withdrew Linux support. They had no reason to continue spending money for some proprietary driver (or something) only to not get any benefit for doing so.

The PS2 did support Linux though, for the same tax credit. I guess the European union or whatever changed their mind on the requirements to receive tax breaks.

if they had kept the drm then fleshed out the family plan as stated, the meltdowns would have been EPIC. that said, there is nothing preventing them from just doing the demo thing as a standard GOLD perk.

not sure you want call of halo titanfall 12? download the full game and play it for an hr...FREE.
