Living in a confined space shouldn't matter when it comes to video games unless you're playing garbage like kinect or wii which I don't think anyone over there is even doing.

As far as commuting I guess but that never stopped them in the 80's-early 2000's. I know they love their handhelds and granted the 3ds and vita aren't bad (3ds is great actually) but... still they are non-factors for anything on a home console. Which is sad. Dark Souls is like their only redeeming game. Everything else is some kind of animu crap that only the smallest minority even gives a shit about.

Thanks Japan for exporting NIS and Atlus games. Don't know how we live without those. Even Square-Enix's biggest games now are just published American games or rehashes of games that were cool 10 years ago now in HD.

Well that's it for the Xbox . Elop just took over and he has been campaigning to release the video gaming division since the 360.

Give it less then year to find a buyer.Maybe Google will take it over since they are pretty much buying everything.
Hopefully Steam will pick up the slack, and bring the home computer to the living room soon.

Stephen Elop is also the guy who was CEO of Nokia when it went down in flames... We are in a 'this could turn it around for Xbox One' scenario here.

Shock and awe...

Writing's been on the wall a while man. Good to see you having the rational take-away from the change over though.

I wonder what Xevy's take will be?

They've been talking about dropping the xbox and bing division since before release, really shouldn't be a surprise to anyone except those who had blinders on.

How much did Microsoft lose the first few years on the 360 with all the hardware failures? I think this article is kind of crap, but it does raise some valid points:

Microsoft Should Consider Getting Out of Gaming - Forbes

The new sales leader is Sony, but that should give no one reason to cheer. Sony lost money for 4 straight years (2008-2012), and was barely able to squeak outa 2013 profitonly because it took a massive $4.6B 2012 loss which cleared the way to show something slightly better than break-even. Now S&P has downgraded Sony's debtto near junk status. While PS4 sales are better than Xbox One, in the fast shifting world of gaming this isno lock on future salesas game developers constantly jockey dollars between platforms.

On top of profit worries is the threat that console market growth may stagnate as gamers migrate toward games onmobile devices. How this will affect sales is unknown. But given what happenedto PCsales it's not hard to imagine the market for consoles to become smaller each year, dominated by dedicated game players, while the majority of casual game players move to their convenient always-on device.

Well, it's not over yet. It was always Elop that wanted to cut mass divisions when he was running for the CEO spot.

He did not get that job, and may not have as much to say about the Xboxes future as one May think.

This has nothing to do with the Xboxes profits or non profits, it has to do with how Elop envisions MS for the future.
Everyone should listen to the twit podcast this week to get the best perspective on it not one that is blinded by fanboy ism.

Quote the source from MS for your comment. Only person attached to MS that had those ideas was Elop, and he was only interviewing for MS when he made those statements

That's where almost all those rumors started from.

He has been campaigning for massive cuts inside MS for awhile now, and has had made no statement as of yet on what he will do yet under his new title.

its hard to imagine what the fuck microsoft or their new CEO is doing, I can't imagine any scenario where putting the dude who wanted to sell xbox and knows shit about gaming is a good idea. maybe he will make the xbox one really, really, really hard to damage like the old nokia phones

I've got no sources except my vague memory of what's been posted in this thread.

Oh bullshit. If the Xbox1 was doing better, of course things would be different.
What's different right now? Nothing has changed. MS seems happy with the Xbox so far according to there press junkets.

The Elop thing is just a speculation based on his ambition to scale down MS. The console market is not even on his radar.

Like I said, he failed to become CEO, so we have no idea yet what MS has him doing other then his new title.

At this point nothing would surprise me. Microsoft has been making questionable decisions for a good while now.

Their hardware numbers are better then they have ever been under former CEO Ballmer.

That isn't their problem right now, they didn't plan for growth because Ballmer is a sales guy, that's what he does best.
Now they have to figure out what they do for the future. As far as profits they are doing well.

They already broke into a very competitive cellular and tablet space

The people on this forum see the console war very differently than the two companies actually in it. From those numbers PS4 looks like it's not the hot shit in Anime-land everyone thought it would be. They sold as many in the country in one month as... the XB1 sold in 1/3 a day? Even with those historical numbers from previous launches Wii u fucking slammed it. Wii U. I'm sure XB1 will sell probably 1/4 of what the PS4 did, but I'm not sure the "million or so they've been holding back" everyone had been talking about for months is much of a factor.

Both consoles are slowing. The gap is only as large as your scope of view allows it to be, but it's going to change. The 'new and shiny' feeling is out and now people will buy it for games. Titanfall, UC4, whatever. Those are going to move consoles and it'll be a good year or two when the dust settles and it's probably neck and neck.

As far as MS new CEO? I don't know shit about that. Don't know him, so I'm not going to conjecture anything. If the division is profitable or near profitable I'd imagine they keep it.

EDIT: Great news is you all can go out to most any store and grab a PS4 now! Because they're there. Waiting.

Elop isn't the new CEO, he is just taking over the Devices and Studios division which includes games and hardware.

And that is kind of bad depending how much free reign they give him. He could easily sink the ship.

Only thing that is good is Julie Larson-Green is still involved.

Say what on their sales? You do realize how tiny Japan is if you're trying to compare day 1-2 Japan PS4 sales to day one US XBOne sales is as a market, right? During an entire lifecycle of a system they usually sell less of even the highest selling units than the average US launch because there's just not that large of a market over there - the age bracket loves gaming, but Japan doesn't have a huge youth population - many of their problems overall are because of their "rapidly aging population" after all, and lots of the queues we take about our average age in the US getting higher we take from looking at them because they've been ahead of us on such.

And yes, WiiU hit at a better time (and at a lower price point) and perhaps you don't understand numbers but 308k (WiiU) is less than 322k (PS4) albeit only by a little bit. Wii original had a better launch window though at 371k although again only slightly different and that's for something that was almost HALF the price point.

The previous launch figure that's the one to compare against as a "failing" is against PS2 (630k!!!!!) - but then again they had a wide open field when PS2 launched with no other serious competition (Dreamcast was it's best competition IIRC and we saw how DC did [I loved my DC too - but it really was my first console I really did much with - owned just Final Fantasies and ChronoTrigger for my SNES never really did anything else]) and a great price point.

I checked last night and saw no PS4's in my area still. Maybe we're just getting shitty distribution up here.
