The Boys

The most unintentionally funny part of the season for me was the Gen V cast humiliation that kept on going.

Like after two seasons of building up Marie Moreau's importance and her powers as arguably beyond Homelander-level (resurrecting dead people, splattering the walls with Godolkin after like 20 aspiring supes couldn't even touch him), she gets called useless by her personal inspiration and hero, Starlight. THEN at the end of that episode, Starlight goes back to Marie Moreau and tells her they need her help after all, and it turns out the mission was to go drive a truck with a few people in it to Canada and get the fuck out of my TV show.

I know they didn't really know Gen V season 3 was going to be cancelled until very late into this season's shooting, but goddamn.

Frankly, my biggest problem was it made Seasons 4 and 5 even worse, as giant chunks of their runtime did not matter (e.g. V1).

All in all, great Season 1, good Season 3, and the rest of the seasons are utterly skippable. No interest in any spinoffs with the current writing crew, and can't imagine ever watching the entirety of this show again.

I don't even remember anything worth re-watching in Season 3. Season 1 was great though and had so much potential. They got the menace of (secretly) evil superman right but then just kinda threw it away with inconsistent powers (most egregious example I remember: Hughie crawling thru vents 4ft above him). Also, Starlight's powers being a wet fart and the actress mutilating herself with plastics surgery didn't help.

I stopped watching after the Hughie rape episode made the show feel like they were just doing stupid shit, that made little difference/sense, to try to out do the previous seasons "shocking" cringelord shit. Maybe that will improve things if I ever get the urge to rewatch some of the show.

Ending was fine - they kept some of the main elements of the comic ending (Hughie and Butcher). The writers also seemed to be inconsistent with why the fish were mad with deep: first it was the pipe, then they suddenly knew about Ambrose his octopus girlfriend that he killed. The later makes more sense than the pipe since he didn’t cause the spill, but odd they only referred to that now

Homelander going Macgruber was unexpected and I have to believe an intentional callback.

Not the worst ending in the world give how terrible most of the preceding was, but that's just clearing the lowest of bars. I actually enjoyed All Father and the way the actor played it -- one of the few bright spots in this season. I'm fine with Butcher never fully losing his humanity, since they never really showed him being all that ruthless, tbh.

The episode and the season felt like the effort of people who just wanted to finally move on. I'll definitely never watch anything from Kripke again -- even in this episode where the stakes should be highest, you get his 14 year old teen boy dialogue and humor infecting it to an over the top degree.

This is gonna be a hot take, I know it.

That was an amazing homage to one of the most under-rated comedies. Definitely must be Forte fans after having him on a few episodes ago playing a complete rat-fuck (which he's amazing at). If he had mentioned toner or white-out I would've made an imdb account just to 10/10 the episode.

Episode was better than previous episodes, though that doesn't say too much. The way he begged forgiveness before it released I expected some huge shit show. It basically turns out like you think it will.

To be honest, the ending of the comics is worse than the series.

The story arcs are quite different, but the jist of it is that Homelander goes insane in his lust for power in both the comics and the series but in the comics it's because he keeps receiving pictures anonymously of himself doing the most horrible shit possible (killing pregnant women, eating babies, etc..) but doesn't remember doing any of it. He thinks he must be going crazy and he thinks himself above the laws of men since he can apparently get away with doing all this, but in a plot twist, it is revealed at the very end in the White House confrontration that this was all done by Black Noir, who is in fact a Homelander clone under his black suit. He was created by Vought as a safeguard against Homelander just in case, except he's even crazier than Homelander. They fight, Noir kills Homelander, then gets wrecked by the military outside and finished off by Butcher (with the crowbar). Then the last arc of the comics is Butcher going on a rampaging crusade to destroy all supes, using a radio signal he found from some russian experiments that can blow up supes' heads, and attempts to broadcast the signal from a skyscraper, only to be killed in a fight with Hughie. Oh and Butcher also killed all the other Boys himself except Hughie and Annie.

I think the series made the right call not following that plot, Homelander going crazy because he thinks he has a god complex makes sense, he's been crazy since season 1 and progressively more and more delusional. I think Butcher killing the Boys would have been hard to swallow because series Butcher is a lot more likable than comics Butcher. They stuck to the comics plot where they could, but the changes were good in my opinion. The main issue with the final season really is the pacing, it was a lot of nothing going on and then pretty much most of it gets resolved in one hour or swept under the rug (what happens to all the other evil supes? is the whole group of the Boys going to die from ass cancer due to Kimiko's radiations? what was the fucking point of Gen V?...)
