I started this up, picked my classes (ENC NEC MNK, hopefully it doesn't suck) and then started killing a little bit. I'm so lost on the gear aspect and how they upgrade and what not. I only really played the original EQ up to PoP and then I went back a few years ago and played on green server classic for a while but even the UI / options are a little overwhelming at the start.

Any decent absolute newbie guides for this? They have a youtube link for getting started but it's mostly a guy just walking you through the process of picking classes and stuff.

The discord server has a FAQ section that has a lot of info on the basics and beyond. Scroll down to the bottom of the list, or close to it, to see the oldest threads where they kinda start with the basics.

The website has a link/invite to the Discord and the wiki (which is pretty good):

Holy shit, that is a lot of progression and steps. I barely remember half of that the last time I flagged through PoP. I think I must have been summoned to the hail/flag mobs and skipped tons of steps.

The Rogue epic isn't BIS for any build I know of; the Mylockar (spelling?) dagger is better at epic level and should be super cheap.

Plus the turn in, in lake Rathe, for doing the Rogue epic the correct way was bugged when I tried to turn in that note (a couple months ago), after wasting half a day killing and PPing that guy. I wanted the High Elf illusion mask, so it required that note, but there is a shortcut if you just want the dagger. I never did it, so I forgot the shortcut, but you should be able to find it by searching the Discord or looking through the bugs section for the rogue epic bug.

Here is the Luclin BiS for SK/Rog/Wiz (as of last month), which shouldn't be much different for SHM over Wiz. Spell power to 750 is the main point, however you get there. SK & SHM epics are still great for that. There is plenty that should be close to BiS that might be cheaper now, like the bracers from Vulak/Sleeper (Camii's Bracer of Vigor). You can also find BiS lists on the Disco class theorycrafting subforum.
It looks little wonky because I co-opted/copied a different list and copy/pasted different class combo BiS lists, along with alternates for the slot, into a single google spreadsheet (with new tabs for different combos), so some have (legendary) and some don't. All are rated at legendary status.

I still like the SK epic because of the spell power. Its hard to turn down 40 SP for some meager backstab dmg bonus. Besides the SP builds dont really rely on backstab dmg, its only like 20-30% of our DPS. They rely on blue poison dmg. I would have to replace that epic with 10x spell power augs, lol. Thats like 130K PP. Shaman cant use the orb of secrets which is 60 SP.

Rogue epic is good because of the debuff though. Once it procs, swap it out.

Yeah there was a pat of the SK epic I got stuck on, thankfully there was another dude there doing it and he helped me out. Entire part that needed to be skipped. So what I say on this server, is if some part does not work, skip it and go to the next. Chances are its not necessary here.

I hate weapon swapping in this game. Especially since the Bandoleer is supposed to be bugged (where it might eat your items, or some shit?). I also like to keep all the items I permanently carry around (clickies, poison, food, etc.) in the bottom/last bag, which even if the bandoleer was ok to use, would drop items in the first open inventory slot.

Is 750 SP a specific point to get to? Like Dex slacking? I am at 740 on my Pal Shm Mag and couldneasily get t it to 750+ by swapping an item. But would lose some other stats.

I also dread PoP and the lenght of clearing all of these bosses. VT takes like 3-4 hours to clear on my build.

Nah, 750 is just the current cap, so close is good enough (afaik).

PoP was definitely a slog with all the flagging. People forget because TLP has changed things so much. Thank fucking God you only have to do it once. There's no way I'd play alts otherwise.

Some also never had the full flag experience because even on Live (in PoP era) they changed it to where you could get Quintessence via some backflag mechanic I vaguely remember. It was too much of a slog to expect to get a new recruit or two and an entire guild need to start back at PoInnovation or whatever. I think you could effectively do Rallos and get into Elementals, or some EP boss to get a Quintessence (with a certain majority % having flagged)? It's been far too long to remember off the top of my head.

Bard Runes are being changed. Apparently they weren‘t supposed to be “permanent“ as in never zeroed from a hit. They are going to adjust them so that they work like a normal rune that auto refreshes as a Bard song while also increasing the rune amount. But it will be a big change nonetheless.

PoP brought me back to EQ and then I only got through a couple of the flags and then quit forever. Hopefully with this server I'll finish PoP because I am really having fun with this.

Ugh. Bards really only offered a big boost to mitigation, since Rizlona's adds basically negligible DPS and Wiz or ENC bring far more to a caster comp. CLR and to a lesser extent SHM and DRU offer far more to melee comps.

Not really sure where BRD fits now and manually keeping rune songs on melody fucks up other shit in regards to DPS and such.

I might have to rethink my BRD/SK/RNG now.
