I guess Tigoles aka Jeff Kaplan is part of the team on this game.

The Legend of California is a multiplayer, action-survival FPS set on the Island of California during the gold rush era.

Explore, gather, craft, build, hunt, and fight your way across a vast untamed frontier. Whether you choose to travel alone or work together with friends, your mission on this mythical island is not just to survive, but thrive.

Stay strong, stake your claim, and become the true Legend of California.

In the trailer someone posted in another thread. First guy holding a rifle shooting off something elevated. Odds of someone in 1849 have a scoped rifle, incredibly small lol. Not to mention it looked more like a modern acog than the scopes that were orignally made that were as long as the barrel. But it is just a game.

From what Jeff says in the interview, the game is not meant to be realistic or a period piece, it takes place in a reimagined California as an island, and while the layout of the land is similar, there's some alternate history hijinks. Safe to say the technology probably is a bit different, a bit like Bioshock I suppose.

This just seems really uninteresting to me. I’ll be very wait and see, but this genre has never appealed to me much.

10 hours of game footage. 😮

oh huh. first views I thought it was a RDR clone.

but its a survival base builder with voxel land gen? interesting. yes. the genre is now PACKED. massively oversaturated. but also most of them are not fully cooked. so, while its saturated, the genre is still waiting for someone to come along and conquer it with a defining entry. the genre is absolutely not "solved".

I like the candle spikes for mining, instead of torches.. and hot placing like Terraria. this shows they are paying attention.

food meter does NOT appear to mimic Valhiems. which. I can understand the issue with everyone just copying it.. but lets be honest, valhiems food system is fantastic.. if your system is not as interesting or dynamic, then either copy valhiems, or don't do it at all. (terrarias food is ok. project gorgons is a bit like terraira, a bit valhiem)

mining looks much faster then Enshrouded.

Gold Rush 49's is an excellent setting for a Survival base builder.

pvp zones, instead of just by server? interesting.

interesting thing about this besides the cool game is the backstory of why tigole left blizzard, the CFO of the company a few years ago basically told him if Overwatch didnt pull in X amount of money the next year and X+Y the next few years a few thousand people would get fired and it would be his fault and I guess that made him finally realize what a shitty boss kotick was and how shitty blizzard had slowly become

all especially fascinating since the years after Overwatch 2 was conceived, launched, poorly received, and reverted back to basically Overwatch lol

What it boiled down for me, like what sort of ultimately broke me in my Blizzard career was I got called in the CFO's office and he sits me down and he gives me a date (which at the time was 2020, and was going to slip to 2021, but at the time it was 2020) and he said 'Overwatch has to make [X amount] in 2020, and then every year after that it needs a recurring revenue.' And then he says to me, 'If it doesn't do [X], we're going to lay off a thousand people, and that's going to be on you.'

And that was just the biggest [fuck you] moment I had in my career. It felt surreal to be in that condition. As somebody who's worked on a lot of games, made a lot of games, and you get in these meetings where they're like, 'Fortnite has 1,400 people working on it, if you just hire 1,400 people and make it free to play, we'll make that money, right?' And that was… I had believed I would never work any place but Blizzard. I loved it. It was a part of who I was. And I felt I was a part of it. And I literally thought I would retire from a place. I never thought the day would come, but that was it. Luckily for Blizzard, that CFO is no longer there.
