I have not seen this, and I'm not sure I actually will but my guess at how the movie progresses is the writer who currently has block dreams up the professor and everyone else.

This is a classic Russian novel. It was a classic 32 years ago when I read it in English while I was living in Japan. It was fairly surreal.

Yeah, that's right. I think it was first published back in the 60s. It will be interesting to see if the movie lives up to the book.
