Saw it last night in IMAX. It's been a long time since I read the source material so I'll refrain from commenting on that aspect but this was a 7/10 for me.

While the casting decisions are being overblown by virtue of how little actual screentime any DEI had or impact to the plot they actually had, the casting of Helen was still absolutely, positively ridiculous even in her limited capacity. I didn't actually mind Zendaya as Athena, largely because from a plot perspective this is explained & ends up working quite well (to my surprise). The worst casting job by far however is Holland; holy fuck was he bad and could have easily brought this movie to an 8 if someone better suited for the role was in place.

Man

My The Odyessy experience is completely destroyed because I saw a frame from a movie that showed a chick I don't like!

Fuuuuuuuuuck

Guess I'll just go watch Citizen Vigilante instead and convince myself that Uwe Boll doesn't make trash.

Uwe Boll for Best Picture!!!

What was the point of making this movie? Ralph Fiennes did a fantastic job in The Return, and that was only two years ago. No DEI choices in there at all, that I can remember.
Making a lot of money, for one. The Return is only half the story and was grounded and not fantastical.

It's already far outpacing the initial $200 million projection. Audience reaction is actually very good (actual polled theater goers, not internet people who have no interest in it).

It was really weird because we're so CGI brained now. It looked great but I'm like "where's the CGI shiny look".

Seems more like a me problem

Out of the entire cast Telemachus felt miscast. (Lol). I think Holland just felt weak next to some if these dudes. Maybe that was the point, though? Ithaca was supposed to be an easy target for boorish men.

They should've cast younger for him imo.
Of all the castings that include bullshit like Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and this is the one that bothers you?

I think I watched it twice now, and it still one of the best movies I've seen in recent years. The finale alone is worth what time investment.

I rewatched the Armand Assante Hallmark mini series on YouTube recently because this was coming out. I don't think I have seen it since college and for all of its flaws production value wise, it's good stuff.

I think he did that On the Beach mini series around the same time which is also pretty great.

Things that bothered me about The Odyessy faaaaaaar more than a couple minutes of Helen:

Weak acting by Tom Holland
No blame on Odysseus for basically setting up a deal that allowed the Trojan war to happen
No Odysseus trying to pussy his way out of the deal - blame shifted to Agamemnon
Tiptoing around 7 years of Calypso and Big O getting all nasty up on her Island for the sake of maintaining O's love for his wife
The way they shot arrows. It looks super limp wristed and uncool.
Odysseus not straight up being a dick to Polyphemus as they escape. Odysseus is basically a nice guy in this telling.
No undead Achilles
I didn't feel like Osysseus got any blame for their misfortunes. Or at least not in a way where I felt its impact

Less annoying:
Gods seem to be boiled down to Zeus, Poseidon, and Athena
I don't think there were any physical manifestations of Gods, actually. I think Athena was just Big O having internal moments with her.
No lotus eaters - this is combined with Calypso

No, you do, just like literally everyone else. Nolan. Nolan's casting director. Everyone else on the set. Every person who encounters her on the street.

Thats what fascinating about this emperor has no clothes phenomenon.

In the affected part of the population, this psyop has overcome forces as powerful as evolutionary psychology and sexual selection, and compelled them to performatively pretend to find this thing attractive. Thats astonishing. We should be surprised every time we hear it. Its like encountering a part of the population that claims dogs are sexually attractive and acts indignant when you protest.

Its not that it even matters who they cast in the latest bullshit movie. Its this - if the propaganda forces can make people pretend and deny even such obvious things, is there any limit to what they can make people pretend to believe? This is "the sky isnt blue" territory.
Was your panic attack during your first case of jungle fever what brought you back to church?

lol you don't understand either.

There are certain physical traits that have commonalities in terms of what your average human will find attractive in a potential mate - usually they are tied to things like perceived health or fertility. However, that is still subjective to a degree since personal preferences play a strong role and more often than not, it's strongly influenced by cultural and learned aspects by your environment. Your immediate family unit and neighbors/peers are going to play a strong role in creating those expectation of what constitutes attractive, as well as media since that provides additional reinforcing examples, although that doesn't limit it as an absolute.

What's wrong with Helen's scar? I can't keep track of everyone's fake outrage.

I feel bad for those who can't just go to a good movie without just seething from MAGGA* brainrot.

Make Ancient Greece Great Again
I like how hating on bad casting in a movie is maga.

Paige doesn't look like a man and Helen of Troy shouldn't look like she worked a double shift at the Waffle House.

You people are fucking weird.

I give the movie a solid 5.5 out of ten.
It’s well directed and made but it just looks like a movie. The audio is off at parts as per normal now so that was annoying. The acting is good at parts and never bad but a lot of it feels like a Hollywood movie, you are never taken out of your seat and transported to this universe; the immersion isn’t there. It’s just a movie when it should be more.

My review is subject to change if I ever actually see it.

MAGGA*

Have you seen the movie?
How did the costume and art direction come off as a whole? I found numerous elements that turned me off from some of the still shots and even the trailer, like too much modernity in a classical setting, but maybe it feels more cohesive when watching it.

Bro, you gave me enough reason not to watch this movie based on your own negative comments.

Maybe I'll come around when it hits streaming, but I highly doubt it. I don't spend a lot of time watching movies anymore, so if I'm going to watch something I want to enjoy it and not for it to be a waste of time.
