The story beats are very similar. "muh girl, muh drugs, muh struggle to compete, muh failure" Sans sport, it could be a retake on the same movie.

I saw The Wrestler, so I don't need to see this "based on a real dude" movie-- because I also saw the real documentary 20 years ago about the "real dude". Whatever contribution Dwayne Johnson can make to that documentary isn't anything I'm particularly interested in.

I saw him promoting it on a British show called Graham Norton and it sure seemed like he was chasing an Oscar. As if they still matter.

It was fine. The Rock was really good in this. But the movie really had no point or purpose. Even his supposed drug addiction wasnt ever really showcased in the movie. Just kind of a bland movie.

Why even make a movie about him, I don't recall him ever being nearly as popular as Wanderlei, Fedor, hell even Rampage or Couture.

Mark Coleman would of been the better choice since they were going for the early days of UFC.

The Wrestler is just a better movie that deserved it's award hype.

The award talk around Smashing Machine seems more like a forced PR campaign by Dwayne Johnson.
