Well, I would have been a hypocrite if I just called anonybro's rant "terrible" without backing it up at all. And if I just selected the most idiotic parts I could be accused of "cherry picking" or "ignoring the parts I don't want to acknowledge". So I went through all his major points, calmly and rationally explaining why the whole thing was terrible, excepting the one valid point I did give him credit for.

Legitimate criticism, bitches. A winner is me.

Lith: "Gamers=Young men that don?t know how to dress or behave, who know so little about human social interaction and professional life. People who are okay with an infantilized cultural desert of shitty behavior. You don't have to reason or argue with these obtuse shitslingers, these wailing hyper-consumers, these childish internet-arguers, they are "dead". And she doesn't like going to conventions, or anywhere close to them because she feels like it wastes her life.

Juggalos=Pretty awesome to hang out with. Yes, people who listen to this and paint their face while drinking Faygo.....

This gets a thumbs up from her. But a bunch of people who have constructed and maintain a multi-billion dollar high tech industry that employs thousands? Pfft...fucking infantilized shit slinging hyper-capitalist losers that can't interact with people well. But the people who worship someone that doesn't know how fucking magnetism works, and paint their face while dancing to an asshole who is proud of being a dumb motherfucker, while rejecting science to be born again in some twisted idiocy? That's just cool, man...

I can't believe more than one person on this board defended this woman--lol. Seriously, why would anyone have circled the wagons around these idiots? It boggles the fucking mind.?

U mad bro?

Indeed. Curious as to who on Rerolled has defended Leigh Alexander, though. I don't remember that happening, but I guess it's possible I missed it.

Let me rerolled-google that for you.

Also, enough is enough with the "gamers are dead" articles. These are NOT the smoking gun so many of you like to pretend they are. Guess what? A lot of gamers were acting like assholes around that time. Some journalists (most notably Leigh Alexander) decided to write snarky, insulting articles about it. Many others decided to write about how "gamer" is becoming less relevant as a label now that everybody and their mom plays games. That's it. There's no conspiracy. Nobody's taking away your games. Even if that's what they wanted to do (protip: It isn't),they couldn't anyway. You're pulling the exact same shit everybody complains about when the feminists do it (ie: Making a huge deal out of something that actually isn't a problem).
Followed by a bunch of backpedaling, spinster bullshit, and "just ignore them lol". That's our MoonMoon.

Ha ha, really?

I don't know if you noticed, but I called out Leigh Alexander BY NAME as having written a snarky, insulting article. How is that defending her?

It's funny that most of what I'm hated for never actually happened. But when you need a bad guy with a terrible stance to justify your own terrible stance, you'll just make one up, won't you? Creative inference is fun!

For the record: We're still at 0 of the "more than one" posters who supposedly defended Alexander. I'm still genuinely curious.

Yeah, I can't really recall anyone defending Leigh Alexander here. Tanoomba, you've been such a contrarian on this forum, you're basically the "go to guy" for blaming stuff on. Remember the time you said you found Hitler sexy?

After finally clearing Arkham Asylum, Arkham City and Arkham Origins (including all side missions and Riddler paraphernalia but excluding the "challenges"), I started Arkham Knight and am loving it. I felt Origins was a little lacking in the presentation aspect; After a fantastic setup where multiple bounty hunters are introduced, I was really looking forward to the unique and imaginative situations they could put me in. Instead, they were all just bosses who felt disconnected from the "stage" they were found in and the rest of the game. Arkham Knight already does a better job, creating a more immersive and imaginative experience. The Man-Bat jump scare was fantastic, as was wondering whether I was actually going to die carrying canisters. I think the Batmobile-based puzzles are well-integrated into the game progression. The way they integrated the Joker into the story is clever, and the characters themselves are interesting and carry emotional weight. I loved the bit where I play as Commissioner Gordon and get to experience Batman casually popping into existence first hand. I could easily see myself putting a lot of time into this game. I hate that they changed the "Detective Vision" button, as I'm constantly calling the Batmobile when I just want to look for breakable walls and shit, even though I can see this was a necessary change to accommodate the new Batmobile mechanics.

Unfortunately, the game only runs at Mire's house, so I can't even play it at home, which sucks.

I also recently cleared Portal 1 and 2. I know I'm late to the party, but I was extremely impressed. The games would have been fantastic on the merits of the mechanics and clever puzzles alone, but the outstanding presentation takes them to a whole other level. Mire and I are currently working our way through the co-op mode, which comes with a lot of satisfying "So THAT'S what we have to do!" moments.

What are you playing now?

I still haven't played Origins(or AK). The first two games were awesome, though.

I'm playing Witcher 3 and I'm about 60 hours in, with what I feel is like 100 more to go. That game is f'ing huge. I'm also about halfway through Ori and the Lost Forest, which is one of the best games I've played in recent memory. I love it.

I'm a console plebeian right now, and it'll probably stay that way until Overwatch comes out. Even that's iffy if the KBM peripheral for PS4 and DOOM multiplayer are good enough.

Right now I'm playing Elder Scrolls Online and Rocket League on PS4. Eagerly awaiting No Man's Sky, Final Fantasy 15, Fallout 4 and Dungeon Defenders 2.

Szli defending Leigh's main points on culture (However, he did call the angry epitaphs in the article dumb and was not a good idea. But essentially I was referring to them having any credibility as cultural critics when fucking Juggalo culture is cool to hang out with but gamer culture can be denigrated so readily. As Szi said, their positions had merit because gaming needs their critical lens on culture (The same critical lens, again, that praises Juggalos)

************************************************** ************

I think Leigh Alexander wrote this piece on Gamasutra when angry, and writing when angry is not a good idea. If you can skim the bile off along with the caricature, there are some valid points in there about the evolution of video game content toward something that is more culturally interesting and, as such, more culturally relevant (pretty sure it does not include Facebook games) and how some people longed for this evolution (I am one of these people). You even get some astute and amusing observations (idiosyncrasies like the scoring system for video game reviews or the brand wars).
I don't think gaming journalists are pushing for a social agenda, I think they have a certain idea of what games are and of what they want them to be. What they want them to be is a cultural product that can reach the... let's say sophistication and maturity of other cultural products. One of the facet of this evolution should be the quality of the writing, in plots, in themes and also in representations. This is something that is shared with other narrative media so the academic world is pretty well armed to analyze this kind of issues from different vantage points (narratology, gender studies, sociology, pscho-analysis, etc), which, to answer fanaskin, is less true for the 'video game causes violence' argument which is usually not originating from academic sources (see also the same argument made for TV, movies, PnP RPG, metal, rock 'n roll, top hats, etc).

As Leigh Alexander mentioned in the Gamasutra piece, the cultural references for most games are Hollywood blockbusters and comic books (which is increasingly one and the same, but that's a debate for the movie house!), so I am not overly surprised that someone analyzing video games through the prism of gender studies finds the medium problematic. Are you surprised? Do you think the overall point is invalid? I have not read the articles, so they might very well be poorly written and hyperbolic, but it seems to me it's difficult to argue that the representation of women is lacking when compared to other media and it's really even more difficult to argue that we are not cultural beings, shaped in no small part by the cultural products we consume and how we consume them.
I am on the side of the people who know how to divide revenue by product cost and realize video games are nowhere close to movies and television as far as reach goes and who realize you had a good idea in not mentioning music nor literature (nor physical media for film and TV). I am on the side of the people who played video games from the early '80s and wonder why, 30 years later, the industry, by and large, still thinks they are 8 years old. I am on the side of the people who have been loving and seeing tremendous potential in the medium for ages and who are elated that in the last 6 or 7 years the indie scene exploded, offering a broader range of mechanics, experiences and themes that are susceptible to attract a broader audience to the medium and bring it from cultural irrelevance to a more acceptable level of artistic sophistication. The horror! I am also on the side of people who think that more people sharing their hobby does not impoverish it, but instead strengthen it.

Now please make my day and question my 'gamer cred' on a MMO board.

Also, no no Tan--you DID defend Leigh and all of them. You just did it by promoting defensive articles, like here.

Anothergreat article about GamerGate.

A highlight:
It was only natural that we would talk about it. It's no different than when newspapers and run op-eds about religious extremism after an abortion clinic bombing or another ISIS beheading video. Major events prompt responses and everyone will want to have their say. Many sites used a variation of the headline "Gamers Are Dead/Over/Undesirable" as a way of expressing frustration with the continual hostility women, trans and queer people have faced within gaming culture - small wonder considering that this had become yet one more example of people suffering from the crime of being The Other.

There's a lot more great stuff there. Worth a read, fo sho.
************************************************** ******************************

Excusing her rhetoric as being caused by hateful gamers, much like abortion clinic bombers and fucking ISIS beheading videos--LOL.
