Takes the Grimm version of Cinderella and dials it up to 11—a body horror in its purest form. If you're not familiar with the Brothers Grimm rendition, you might want to avoid this trailer and go in blind.

Out on VOD, SHUDDER and torrents.

Edit: It's a foreign-language movie, so they probably slapped on some shitty dubbing by default.

Subtitles baby! I honestly turn on subtitles for all of my movies even if they're in English now because my hearing is bad. It surprising because I've gone back to room watch some old movies especially stuff with a lot of British people or Cockney accents, and now I can actually read what the fuck they're saying. It's actually been really helpful.

Oh my God don't go and look up a gif for deaf, there's like 20 of a fat black lady signing stupid shit at the front of the search.

Haha, I really just have bad hearing. It's been that way since I was a kid but then probably working on construction sites and listening to heavy metal in my truck with the volume pumped up didn't do me any favors.

I want to say it's supposed to be 90 decibels is where you start getting hearing damage, but I had a bunch of operations on my ears as a kid, tubes in and removed, adenoids removed. I can't scuba dive because the pressure is too goddamn much on my eardrums.

Most of the arguments I get into with my wife is because I just didn't hear her, but we've kind of worked through that because she'll realize I didn't hear what the hell she was talking about.

I'm probably going to need hearing aids at some point. Hey but it sometimes gives me an excuse to just ignore her when she's rattling on about something stupid and I can just walk off...😉

I think the red letter media guys have done a couple of videos about this, and it's all about the margins. That's why Blum House puts out so many films for such low budgets but yet they make double. If you think about it you can do a successful horror film if it's a good story with just a handful of characters in a single setting, and maybe spend a million to 5 million or something, bring in 20 million worldwide.

I think genre films are just more profitable.

I might have exaggerated a little but it's pretty distasteful at time. I was eating during some parts and I had to pause as I did not want to spoil my meal.
I haven't watched it yet, but I had planned on checking it out this weekend. Is it just really gory or something, or just a bad movie?

I'm assuming it's probably a little bit of both.

If you consider its a low budget movie it was okay.

Theres some gore but not too bad. More like a bunch of "ewww" moments, at least toward the end.

Edit: Also almost all the characters are pretty bad and wierd.

My hearing is similar. I can hear some really sensitive sounds, but the effects of working in a sheet metal fabrication factory for 20 years caused enough damage to my ears that it makes me unable to focus on the sound of a voice. Mid range audio seems to be the first to go. Someone could be talking directly to me, and if there are ANY other noises near by, I can no longer understand anything the person is saying.

Yeah they're just some frequencies I can't hear anymore, and not hearing other stuff is definitely directional.

I've got a good ear and a bad ear but neither of them are great, I just had too many ear infections in my right ear that have ruptured the eardrum while growing up and from what the doctors have told me it's pretty scarified.

When that stuff goes nuclear, that's easily one of the worst pains you could ever imagine. You know if you know. It's like a goddamn ice pick in your ear.

It's a body horror movie—and I dare say it lives up to that. Also, Norwegians are responsible for this one, as it was written and directed by a Norwegian, and co-produced with Sweden and a few other countries.

If you consider its a low budget movie it was okay.

Edit: Also almost all the characters are pretty bad and wierd.
Sure, it only has a $4 million budget, but I wouldn’t call it low-budget in a negative sense—they used what they had effectively, in my opinion. And with most of the characters being unsympathetic and acting weird, as you put it, I think it intensifies the surreal feeling of it all.

Blumhouse gets a lot of flak these days for being the frozen meal of horror—quick, cheap, familiar, and mostly just filling the gap rather than offering anything truly new. And I think that’s why when something like The Substance or The Ugly Stepdaughter comes along, people immediately write it off as just another gross-out for attention.

Totally get that reaction—both films are intense—but I think there’s more going on than shock for shock’s sake.

Instead, they use body horror to explore how far people will go chasing youth, beauty, or acceptance. The grotesque stuff is the point. Whether it’s the brutal transformation in The Substance or the twisted fairy tale satire in Stepdaughter, both reflect how obsessed society is with image and perfection.

You don’t have to love them, but I’d argue they’re aiming a little higher than just trying to make you squirm.

I mean... it's WAY closer to the actual Grimm story than what Disney did with it. You want real, or Memorex? heh
