I think this is a solid film even though Body Horror is my least favorite. The Substance is better but this is like a solid 6- 7/10.

That being said I will probably never watch it again.

For people talking about the budget being low, the movie looks fantastic.

I mentioned low budget but I never meant it in a bad way. Its better than many costly Hollywood movies.

It's worth watching for sure.

I never saw the Substance but I have seen lots if clips from it, seems similar with kinda disgusting parts.

I enjoy body horror films that have something going on beneath the surface, so I’ll probably rate this one slightly higher. That said, I agree that The Substance edges it out—though its budget was at least four times bigger than The Stepdaughter. Still, this is a solid film for me—probably the best Cinderella spin since the Grimm brothers' version.

I just watched a movie the other day, I think it was on shudder, called Vesper. It's kind of a mix between dystopian future, dark fairy tale, and David cronenberg type body horror. It was fantastic. I honestly hadn't seen a movie quite like it in a very long time and I highly recommend it. It's got a few issues here and there but it's totally worth your time.

It's just completely unique, and there wasn't any modern day politics thrown into it. Probably one of the best movies I've seen all year. I even think it came out a few years ago or something but was just off my radar, and I don't think I got a release of any sort.

I usally spot most movies or at least their trailers but Vesper is not one of them. Just checked youtube for the trailer and it was completely new to me, looked really interesting too.

Will make my Plex guy download it!

Sorry for the late reply. I was pretty sure, based on your description, that I had seen the movie—but after checking out the trailer, I initially thought, 'Yup, that’s the one.' But halfway through, I didn’t recognize all the kids shown in the trailer. I must’ve seen another movie with a similar story. I think it was some Australian production where a girl and her father lived in a bunker-like complex, and she wasn’t allowed to let any outsiders in. Outside, alien machinery was patrolling, looking for human survivors. I can’t, for the life of me, remember the title of the movie. But I’ll be sure to check out Vesper—yet another movie to add to my ever-growing backlog ;)

So I'm watching it this evening and I may be about a third of the way through. I couldn't really tell where the hell it was going and the score is kind of off-putting with the synth music because of the time period.

I'm assuming if it's about to go off the rails because I got to but seen with the protagonist and her sister out in the woods:

She's talking about eating a tapeworm egg to lose weight so she can marry the prince and all I can think is either horrific body horror or hilarity will ensue.

I kept bringing up the tapeworm throughout the movie as the primary thing she needs to address and expecting horrific results. Will not spoil.

I didn't read any spoilers and I don't remember the last few days of us all chatting about this film. I mean it's okay but it's not the greatest, but the tapeworm angle has me interested to see where it goes, and I don't think it's going to end well.

Part of me thanks maybe it was being produced at the same time as the substance, hence the reason for the synthwave music maybe. I don't live the score is just really off putting because it changes from completely alien modern or '80s synth to something that would be appropriate for a movie set and some stupid historical time.
I just know movie scores are one of the things I always pay attention to you and so many films nowadays just have really bad ones, but when you have something that is just counterintuitive or doesn't sync up with the setting, I just really notice it and it bugs the shit out of me.

Definitely going to have to go back and reread the thread.

Halfway through which is getting done walking the dogs and pouring a glass of whiskey.

I actually like the score. It adds to the surrealism feel of the movie.
