Not exactly the same thing. But I come from a line of people on coastal Maine. My grandfather was born in 1917, so he learned how to eat cheap. He had a summer place by the mouth of the kennebec river, right near fort Popham. And when we would dig clams as a kid he would break one open, wash it in a tide pool, put a little vinegar in it, and eat it raw.
He also told me that when he bought the place in the fifties, you used to be able to just turn up seaweed at low tide and find lobsters everywhere.
