Bill is apparently awful at chess. I think even I could beat magnus with a 30:2:00 game clock. I'm not nearly as good as him, but i am a VERY good chess player (2120 FIDE) Bill loves to play games with big people. I had a friend who played bridge at a small local club, and randomly out of the blue bill gates showed up, and had flown in by helicopter the best bridge player in the world at the time to be his partner. Needless to say, it was a pretty damn cool experience for everyone, and he said bill gates was a great guy.
