Netflix is about $20 per month.

So for that to make any financial sense at all, they're banking on 11 million people signing up, coming back, or at least extending their sub for another month that would have otherwise canceled.

They have a total of approx. 300 million subscribers right now, so they're hoping for this one show to give them about a 3 and a half percent bump.

people always like to say "oh it's the beancounters/suits/executives making the dumb decisions" but things like this really prove that is not true.

it is bizarre and there must be some other reason, like the licensing for the IP requires them to put out a season of content to keep the license for 2 more years or something. the smartest financial decision would have been to kill the show in season 3, its clearly not working and nothing they do will make the show Game of Thrones big at this point.

i think they are starting to realize though that they can't take so many years between seasons, Wednesday s2 ratings are not great and s1 was massive and huge for them. Squid Game s3 was good numbers but still nowhere near s1 numbers. I think they are slowly pivoting to turning shows around annually instead of 2-3 year waits but it takes a long, long time for some of these legacy, expensive shows.

Stranger Things is probably gonna be the nail in the coffin, whatever Netflix says it was extremely telling that they let the Duffer Bros (Stranger Things) go make an exclusive deal with Paramount for their next projects, if they really thought more stuff from them would be valuable they would have paid out their Jew noses

The finale must be complete tripe to let the Duffer brothers go-- but Paramount is also throwing around a lot of money on "maybe" projects. I could see them outbidding Netflix on whatever the aftermath of Stranger Things ends up being.
